Cast Aluminum housing FIXED

‪@Samcrac‬ send me his serpentine belt tensioner housing ... and I weld it back together .... with the new HTP REVOLUTION 2500 ‪@usaweld‬ and some Rockmount Neptune ‪@rockmountwelding‬ .... overall a casting loaded with impurities but the end result is a successful repair !

nice work! I enjoyed following along. For parts that dirty, I like to heat a bit, then soak in some kind of solvent. Doesn't always help, but it lets me spend more time and money on a fix for the same price to the customer. :)

Thanks! Yes the heat can sometimes help “burning out” oil or grease out of a casting …. But this one here the porosity seemed to come right out of the casting …. 🤷‍♂️

Nice work! I wouldn’t want to have to deal with that cast aluminum, although I am a glutton for punishment so I’d probably attempt it 😂. That machine is amazing and the thought that you put into shows!

Amazing repair. Its nice to see when skilled people use their skills and knowledge to repair items otherwise deemed non-repairable etc. And yea I came from Samcracs channel, but I will watch your videos, because I have always wanted to look at starting to learn a bit of welding :D

I would love to win Sam's give away but I'm glad he connected me with your channel. I have a 09 Cadillac CTS with only 40,000 miles. It was my fathers, he passed during the height of COVID so I've kept it to be close to him. I'll drive it until I can't that's for sure lol. I've already needed some parts to fix some issues like the drivers seat rails and yup same as Sam the parts are no longer available so its either fix what you have or get parts from a pick & save lot. I will for sure reach out to you when I need some of my parts welded in the future. Thank you sir for what you do, and what a super job on Sam's tensioner for his ZR1!

Man, I hate using rotary files, but you gotta do what you gotta do..... having the carbide with big flutes sure helps on aluminum....I saw RedBeard give a tip on using rotary files, put a pair of rubber or neoprene gloves on under your leather....or just the rubber, keeps those pesky burrs out of your most precious tools, your fingers.....Stay Safe and weld on my friend, Pau

5:25...any idea what alloy the Rockmount filler is similar to???? thanks....

Hard to say. When you dip it it flares up green that is a lot of magnesium … at least 3% maybe more. It flows nice and deals with contaminants well, that is a good indicator for silicon …. It also is super strong … 34000 psi … and when it falls on the ground it is rock hard and sounds like a sewing needle …. That is a sign of a fair amount of manganese …. How and what it is exactly and if this is everything ? No one knows ….. I have not seen any other AWS compliant stuff behave like this …. It works really well, it is very expensive and it makes tough jobs easy and impossible jobs possible!

When you get old man .. in my 20’s i could see EVERYTHING but couldn’t weld for shit … in my 30’s i coild still see good and weld decent too …. In my 40’s …. Its reading glasses or welding by brail 😂

I'm looking to start dabbling in welding for cars that I'm going to do up; do you have any tips as to tig or mig for a beginner doing car bodywork? I'm in the uk as well so probably looking to buy a second hand machine online somewhere to begin with

get a mig machine with 0.8mm wire ... that is a good starting point ... then get a piece of sheet metal and try to dial it in and make some test welds
