I saw this in the theater when it was originally released. On the big screen the plane crash scene was terrifying, especially when the engine exploded. Also, did you notice no musical score played in any of the island scenes? That was very effective in putting the viewer into the situation, with only the sounds of the breakers, wind, rain, etc. And the film's title foreshadowed how Chuck would feel. A "castaway" (one word) is a shipwrecked person, but the title is two words, "Cast Away".

@My-Name-Isnt-Important Жыл бұрын
For people who've been stranded alone for long periods of time, talking to yourself and even acting like you're talking to another person, actually helps you deal with the situation. It's some sort of mental shield people tend to instinctively use to help deal with the stress and trauma of the situation they're in. This film portrays it pretty well, the ball isn't actually needed but I think that was to help the audience.

she's sacrificing her own happiness (and Tom's) to continue living with someone she doesn't love as much. Just because you are with one person doesn't mean you always need to be. Also... if marriage vows are somehow sacred to you or whatever... she made those same vows to Tom's character, and thought he was dead when he really wasn't. She's abandoning her old family (even just the two of them, still a family) for the current one. What's the difference? Kids? Kids can and do survive divorce all the time. Often, forcing yourself to stay in an unfulfilling relationship out of a sense of duty or obligation can even be the worst thing you can do... for your partner and everyone else, not just yourself. Not saying that her decision was right or wrong... but... no cause for removal of hats regardless of how you feel about it. I feel like some people don't understand what real love is really like and how it can change you to lose or give that up. They stay in relationships because they think they're supposed to, but are never truly happy the way those who have experienced true love and deep connection can be. They probably think of themselves as more mature or responsible... but in reality they just don't know.

@@nooneofconsequence1251 "Also... if marriage vows are somehow sacred to you or whatever... she made those same vows to Tom's character, and thought he was dead when he really wasn't." But she never made any vows to him -- they were never married. Their friends/family ask when he'll be popping the question (in the Christmas dinner scene -- see 5:28 of James' reaction video) before he gets the fateful text. It's implied that he's going to propose to her when he's back from his flight -- he leaves her with a tiny gift-wrapped box, and tells her not to open it until he comes back -- but he never gets the chance to ask. Unbeknownst to me at the time, I had an abcessed tooth root years ago. I was at work (building houses) when the pain kicked into high gear. It hurt so freakin' bad that I came this close 🤏 to bustin' the tooth out of my mouth with my hammer. That, and the time I had severe Diver's Ear in both ears (they swelled completely shut and had to be mechanical opened by an ear specialist whilst I held onto the chair arms for dear life spewing forth a torrent of vulgarity that was heard by everyone in the building) are the 2 worst pains I've ever experienced in my 46 years. Teeth and ear pain are no joke lol Edit: Honestly...I would've probably stayed on the island. My brain weighs pros and cons logically with emotions playing no part. As long as I had food and fresh water I can't see choosing the unknown of the open ocean; the chances of surviving long enough to be rescued in such a large area is quite small...after 4 years no one would still be looking for you, so you'd pretty much just have to get lucky and end up in/near a "busy" shipping lane. And since I already talk to myself a lot as it is, and I rather enjoy my personality, I wouldn't need no stinkin' volleyball to keep me company haha Here are a few movie suggestions for you, my friend (in no particular order): 1. The Sandlot 2. Stir Crazy 3. Meet Joe Black 4. Robocop 5. Dances With Wolves (Director's Cut) 6. The Return Of The Living Dead 7. The Abyss (Extended Cut) 8. Road To Perdition 9. Field Of Dreams (the main character is a farmer 🙂) 10. Frank Miller's Sin City (personally I prefer the extended cut as it allows the chapters to be viewed in their entirety, 1 by 1) 11. Popeye (the live action film starring Robin Williams in the title role) Great reaction, as always! I really enjoy being able to witness you experience films for the first time. My past was basically the opposite of yours; I was always a movie nut...watching movies, reading about movies, thinking about movies, talking about movies lol Local mom 'n pop VHS video rental stores were one of the major events in the latter part of the 20th century in my small rural mountain town haha Ah, the 80's...those were grand days, indeed!

As always- another wonderful, fun flick ride along. Thank You! I’ve always felt the end was about the crossroads of life, literally & symbolically. He doesn’t open that box. The wings are like a magnet for him. He then leaves the note- This saved my life. Then he unknowingly runs into her, not seeing the wings until she pulls away. While it’s left to the viewer to interpret, I’ve always felt those wings were still a magnet. Remember- as you so rightly pointed out- she too was now minus ‘a half’, a partner. My Mom used to always say ‘What’s meant for you will not pass you by.’ Also ‘One never knows how strong they are until it’s the only choice they have.’ I see both in the ending🥰 But again- there’s a certain genius (& beauty even) in the viewer also being left in that very crossroad! Lari White was a successful country music artist at the time of Cast Away. Sadly, she passed away about 4yrs ago at the age of 52 from cancer. Real wings now… She has a song ‘Stepping Stone’ that’s always worth a listen😊 Appreciate you & your open/honest reactions, sir! Stay safe & love much💖

Very interesting story behind this movie...You would imagine they'd film the two halves of the movie in reverse, where Hanks would have the time to get fit prior to the start of filming, and do the later half first, then he could eat all he wanted to prepare to film the first part. Logically, getting out of shape would take a lot less time. Hanks didn't want to do that. He wanted to film it in sequential order, as it is written..The director, Robert Zemeckis (who also directed Hanks in Forrest Gump) was in a bit of a quandary. What was he to do with the crew, after filming the first have, while waiting for Hanks to get fit to film the rest of the movie?..What he did was sign on to film another movie "What Lies Beneath" w/ Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer for a year, enabling him to keep the same crew working, right into filming the last half of this film..From what I understand that's never been done before.

During all aircraft malfunctions the co pilot reads from the Quick reference handbook and the pilot follows those procedures. The fact that both just randomly hit buttons is Hollywood pure fiction.

greetings and love from Germany again....well, like you said at the beginnig of the movie...he is very passionate at work and he takes his job very seriously......so i thought it was quite loyal and honorable of him not to open these packages. Cause here in Germany, and in a few other european countries, we have that so called ´Postal Secrecy´. The principle of letter/packages secrecy guarantees that only you as the recipient are entitled to read what is in your letter. What is inside an envelope concerns nobody but the person to whom the letter is addressed. Anyone who without your knowledge and consent removes, opens and reads your mail - perhaps even from your letter box - is committing a criminal offence, whether it’s an invitation from your girlfriend to an upcoming jazz concert or your brother’s birthday greetings. This also applies to parents, who are expected to respect the secrecy of their children’s letters. There is, however, an exception to this rule: if parents suspect that their child has problems or is in trouble, they may open the letters. After all, they do have a parental duty of care. But now i have heard that in the United States, there is no specific constitutional guarantee on the privacy of correspondence. If thats true i understand your point of view to open those packages imidently. I probably would do the same....however, great reaction as always....oh, btw..did i miss the comment thing, that you had running...what was it.? 1000 dollars i think, right...who was the lucky winner.? ahhh, doesn´t really matters......for sure it wasnt me.....i never win anything, me poor 🤣🤣....PEACE & stay safe, my friend

This was based on actual events though the FedEx employee was actually stranded for over 6 years.

The box & the Dick/Bettina ranch at the beginning. It took me 2-3 watches of the movie to put it together. The "wings" package was delivered to Dick in Russia. I am certain it was divorce papers, because Dick's name was removed from the ranch sign at the end. It was Bettina that Chuck meet on the road at the end. I like to think that Chuck & Bettina ended up together. What was in the package? Signed (by Dick) divorce papers.

I love reaction videos for multiple reasons, but sometimes it's for movies like this that I haven't seen in ages but do remember everything that happened so don't really want to watch it again. Get kind of a condensed, Reader's Digest version...so thanks for all your reactions!!

Lol, you stumbled upon the popular "it was a Satphone all along" theory all by yourself.

Actually I guess it was divorce papers.

I’m sure someone has already said it in the comments, but I’ve always heard it joked that the box he didn’t open contained a waterproof satellite phone. How ironic would that be 😂 Edit: then you said it 😂

One thing that bugs me is that he got really tanned on the island but when he's rescued the tan goes away.

I´m similar to him...back in the day i use to travel to Yugoslawia, (today Croatia) for 2 weeks. ..i got a good tan very quickly but back at home it was gone after 4 weeks...just like it happend to Chuck Noland. ..and that bugs me 😉

One of Tom’s best!!!!! What an amazing actor! It was funny how he was sorting the packages 😂 I love Wilson! Humans are innately social. We have to communicate!!!

I believe the lady at the end with the missing half name on the sign, was the ex wife of the Cowboy guy with a mistress getting a package from his wife in the beginning. It makes sense haha
