My grandmother purchased hope chest for all the granddaughters when we graduated from High School. I still have mine, filled mine up with kitchen supplies. I'm 67 now, plan on giving my chest to my granddaughter.

I am 69 and have my grandmother's cast iron. I have 3 different size skillets from her. I also have a couple I bought new and a couple from a flea market. I use my grandmother's every day. It brings her to life in my kitchen with wonderful memories

Mine is from my great grandmother, to my grandmother, to my mother to me. My mom cooked almost all of our meals with it. And I did for my family as well.

I just discovered this brand recently. Found a 12 inch skillet & 8 inch chef skillet on ebay and after stripping and baking them I am in heaven. They are a dark deep bronze color and smooth as butter.

Beautiful pans from Smithey. I have a few cast iron pans from my mom, and my mother in law. Just recently, my sons girlfriend gave me a cast iron casserole pan. It's gorgeous, and makes excellent cobblers.

A very informed fellar there sharing what he knows🍳I never considered there being led in older iron cast pans 😮 My son's best buddy related a story recently of coming across a very heavy ironcast skillet which he picked up as he n others were on a 15-mile hike on the Appalachian trail. He lugged that thing all the way back home. He is very proud of that. I will tell him to purchase that led kit tester. TY!

My favorite cast iron piece that I have is an old Griswold chicken fryer. I have no idea how far back it goes. It has just always been around. If it could talk, I can only imagine the stories it could tell.

My favorite cast iron is the cornbread mold. Happy memories of my grandma making them just for us kids! Thats the only peice own. I was given a full set of Revierware. Its stainless steel with a copper bottle. Still, one day I'd like to get a dutch oven in cast iron! I'll be checking into Smithy's! Thats for the video! Always a blessing ❤️

Beautiful cast iron! I have never seen a pan so shiny. Most of my cast iron is bargain, but I enjoy cooking on it. I barely ever use anything else anymore. I need a little pot. I don’t always want to use the big dutch over to boil things and sometimes the skillets are just not deep enough.

I have never heard of them. I have a cornbread cast iron mold from my grandmother. I have a cast iron Dutch oven and skillet that belonged to my mom. I use that skillet all the time. They do have some beautiful looking cast iron.

I use my grandmother’s skillet and I just love it. I have the #6 Smithey which is handy for small amount cooking. I was wondering about your cast ironware wall hangers; what is the length and do you remember where you purchased them? Thanks, Constance.

The rods that my cast iron pieces are hung on are just simple pot racks from Amazon. I would love to find something cast iron some day, but these do the job :) amzn.to/4bxAEl1

Thanks for the video. Never heard of this brand. Checking them out. Some years back bought a small pan at TJMax. Used it a couple of times only as every time we fried or scrambled eggs, they would end up with a blackish stain. Followed the instructions to clean/ season, etc., to no avail. Maybe that was normal, but ended up trowing it away.

I have the #10 skillet and #14 dual handled skillet, with lids, and think they’re both fantastic! I’ve been thinking about the farmhouse skillet but unsure about whether to get the regular or deep version. What would you choose?

Oh that is a tough call! I will be going to Alabama for a visit in a few weeks, and I will stop in to the mercantile and look at them in person again. I am leaning towards the deep one myself, because I think it will be more versatile.

I have a cast iron skillet that was my grandmother's. The inside has been kept oiled and looks like new but the outside is not smooth. It is like is has a bunch of stuff cooked on it. It is rough. Is there any way to make it smooth like the inside? I want to be able to pass it on down to my grandkids but not in that shape. Love the videos.
@CosmopolitanCornbread
@CosmopolitanCornbread 3 ай бұрын
My grandfather’s is very rough in the outside. Mainly because he cooked over an open fire. You could get it off with steel wool or even a sander, but then you would have to re-season the outside at least. I’d be inclined to leave it as is. These history there, as long as the index is in good shape :)

I’ve been eyeing the farmhouse skillet for a couple of years, but I’ve hesitated because I am not that familiar with carbon steel. Do you know much about it? How is it different than cast iron or stainless steel? Thank you for sharing your pieces. :)
@CosmopolitanCornbread
@CosmopolitanCornbread 3 ай бұрын
Carbon steel is very similar to using cast iron. It does have to be seasoned like cast iron, but the Smithey ones are lighter. I do own a carbon steel pan, but it isn't a size that I use a lot, so it doesn't get much use in my kitchen. The one I have is made by Lodge, and it is actually quite heavy, unlike the Smithey ones.

I have a question on Smithy, because of the raised bead on bottom can it be used on an induction range top? It is not really flat bottomed which I understand is a requirement for induction. Thanks, Smithy is beautiful cast iron.
@CosmopolitanCornbread
@CosmopolitanCornbread 3 ай бұрын
I have never used an induction stove, but you would probably want a chef's skillet or the deep skillet. Those do not have the ridge around the edge of the bottom, and should be just fine for that kind of a stove.

Do you know why the old cast iron numbers do not correlate with the size? For instance a Wagner Ware #8 is a ten inch skillet. I have a #5 (No makers name) that is an 8” skillet. I have ways wondered.
@CosmopolitanCornbread
@CosmopolitanCornbread 3 ай бұрын
I've wondered the same, but I think it has to do with *which* size skillet it is for the brand. For example, if a brand has 5 different sizes, it could just be numbered by which it is, but not the actual measurement.
@Terryo1939
@Terryo1939 3 ай бұрын
@@CosmopolitanCornbread that would make sense. Thank you
@TSZMommaof3
@TSZMommaof3 Ай бұрын
@@Terryo1939the numbers on the vintage cast iron like Wagner or Griswold correspond to a particular cooking eyelet on a wood burning stove. For example a skillet that is 10-10.25in size would fit a no 8 eyelet on a stove. Since stoves have changed most manufacturers now put the actual size of the cookware on the bottom. Hope that helps

Hi Constance, I just got an antique wroth steel baker's rack and need strong hooks to hang my 4 cast iron skillets on it. Which are the best hooks to hang my heavy pots, that I can pick up at Lowes or Home Depot?
@CosmopolitanCornbread
@CosmopolitanCornbread 26 күн бұрын
Are you talking like “S“ hooks to go on the rack and hold the pans? Any steel hooks should work fine, just make sure they fit over the rack and then through the pan’s handle opening. You could spray paint them black to match the rack if you wanted to, also 😉

Can you use the iron skillets on an electric stove? May sound like a silly question, but I had used an old iron skillet and it scratched he’s my stove. Thanks
@CosmopolitanCornbread
@CosmopolitanCornbread 3 ай бұрын
I know with regular coiled electric stoves, they are fine. But from what I understand, with glass top stoves cast iron can be used, but to never slide it. Only lift and move. I have never really owned a glass top stove, so I can't give an experiential answer, only from what I have read, The skillets that have the ridge on the bottom (like the 10 and 12 inch ones I showed) probably can't be used on an induction or glass top, but the chef skillets or deep skillet that have no ridge are probably just fine. Maybe someone else with a glass topped stove could chime in and give some input :)
