If some of the wood varies in width, it would be nice if someone made a blueprint for those who only have the cast iron ends. Also, where do you get the support brackets if you only have the ends to start with?

AND AGAIN! You publish a video matching one of the projects in my, ahem, 'queue' (aka list of things I never seem to get to). I went to the recycling centre a few years ago to get rid of some stuff... and came back with one of those benches that was in the skip. (I've never heard the end of that.) It's been sitting ever since alongside another one that was here when we bought the house. So thankyou Vikkie - this is probably the nudge I needed. 👍 Thanks also for sharing the tip about the t-shirts. I never know what to buy people for Christmas and birthdays so a few home-designed t-shirts will be helpful. Fabulous channel; keep them coming. 😊
@TheCarpentersDaughterUK2 жыл бұрын
Glad I could help! As for designing your own t-shirts, this is worth a watch. If I were to do more in the future... I'd probably try and focus on black in with paler coloured tees. They come out much better. But the lino you pick is a lot of trial and error. The softcut I used is ok for simple designs... if complex, try traditional lino. But the Gildan tees I handprinted on are fluffier than the Teemill ones, which I don't think help: thecarpentersdaughter.co.uk/reviews/linocut-printing-t-shirts-2/

I love this. Every now and again I'll see an old bench like these sitting out with the trash but around here you have to grab things when you see them because we have what we call "junkers" that drive around neighborhoods all day, the day before trash collection day for whatever area and they will pretty much take anything. I've managed to score some great stuff including a ton of cedar 2x4s from fences that are easy to clean up with a belt sander and thickness planer.

We moved house a couple of years ago and the previous owners left a bench at the bottom of the garden, I've been thinking of restoring it since we moved in, as a non-diyer I've found getting started really hard but this has inspired me to just do it so thanks. The breakdown will start this weekend

Nice job Vikkie, I happen to have this same bench. And it's nearing the end of it's usefulness. But like me, it's aging look is what I call "rustic" and it's only used decoratively at this point. And now that I'm retired (at 58) it's likely to stay that way. I just have too much to do now. Thanks for posting, good to see you again.

If one wants to avoid using wood and having to do that again, you can always use composite decking material. Made mostly of plastics and glue with the look, feel, and color of wood . It comes in many different colors and will last much much longer than wood.

We have inherited one with the garden. We have been putting it off renovating the house and the garden to grow veggies. We did repaint it black a few year back but the wood seems fragile now. Ours have slats all the back so fairly simple. The slats are probably about 5cm thick like a 2x1 inch. If i was to restore it on the cheap, what wood could i get away with in London? I don't have a router but i have learnt to curve with a sander and can use chisels, planes etc. We have a jigsaw, circular saw and grinder too. We have a B&Q and Champion Timber within walking distance for 3+ metres that don't fit in the car. With wood and delivery prices increasing and to be mindful of the co2 impact I need to off set it somehow to add value. I have the time and effect, in between gardening just need a choice of wood to ball park a figure for the budget. I hope that make sense.

Recently acquired a pair (left and right) of English late 19th century bench ends. They have arm rests, and are quite ornate with cherubs with wings in the middle. Looking forward to restoring them after watching your video. How they got to the US is a mystery.

Hi Vikkie, your video has inspired me to restore a garden table with similar cast iron sides. A quick question, when you used the angle grinder to cut the rusty screws and bolts off. Did you cut the nut where bolt that was sticking out from and then WD40 and unscrew the nut? Or did you cut under the nut and bolt just fell off? Ever so sorry, I couldn't see in the video. Cheers.

Very nice restoration, I don't think proper cast iron bench ends are made now, at least the ones I've seen look very skinny, or made of aluminium or even plastic made to look like cast iron. There's a company called Lost Art in Lancashire that casts old style ones, if you want to pay around £600 per pair! P.S. Nice editing work 😊

Hi Vicky, I don’t know if you remember me, but I am John from Eaglescliffe near to where you live. I just happen to have two sets of those cast iron sets all painted up to stop rust sitting in my back garden. My post code is TS16 0BB and if you would arrange to get them, I would be happy to get rid of them for no money at all. I was going to rebuild them myself, but I have done six lots already and that is enough, at seventy-one I don’t think I have another two in me.
