ALL the old drains and vents are out. Lots of interesting stuff in there over the past century. Kind of calls into question whether they actually were draining much - I know one of them wasn't venting at all anymore.
But that's all in the lovely past tense...

Taken into account how much diligence and discussion around quality on amp design and build is on this channel, it surprises me to what low or no standard houses are build where you live. Suggest you stop working on amps for a while and get this fixed or better directly demolish the place and build it up new.

Diamblo to the rescue, RIP old iron. This is something like a wedding, something old, something new, getting back on track and a lot of butt crack.

When the stamp in the cement at the front gate says "1911" as it does at my house, you come to know about cast iron drains, lath and plaster, tube and knob, and those blue junction boxes and "romex." Kinda the same mental reaction as seeing the rat's nest of wiring in my 1962 Premier amp.

Nice progress Lyle! Iron pipe is very quiet, compared to plastic, so you may hear more gurgling on use...usually not an issue for single family domiciles!

Im glad you're posting and recording this. Im about to do the same thing with my wife and I's bathroom. Needs a new subfloor, vinyl flooring, trim, tile, paint and tub. And its our only bathroom/shower so im really looking forward to taking showers outside and crapping in a bucket for a week....lol. But all said and done it will be worth it. I already updated most of the plumbing cause our drainage stub out was corroded and stuck together so it had to be cut out with a sawzall but it looks and functions so much better now. I also had to update the sweat connections for the sink hot and cold water shut off valves, i just added some half inch copper threaded connections so i could use the threaded valves that are considerably easier to replace whenever nessesary than the old sweat connection shut off valves. Anyways, im glad to see a like minded individual tackling the job himself too. Looking forward to the updates!

I remember when me and my brother were kids, the council were knocking down some old prefab buildings on our road. Our dad used to send us to them to get all sorts of scrap metal from them. Lead pipes, cast iron pipes, copper pipes. ( this was in the 1950’s very early 60’s) We used to go to to the scrapyard every Saturday to cash in our stash 😂😂😂😂

From one pedant to another, lath is pronounced with a short 'a'. While I'm at it, the analog to 'toenailing' with screws is a pocket screw, so named because one usually cuts an angled pocket in the end of the board before driving the screw. Cheers, Alan Berlin

Lyle im so glad the cast iron is gone. Its old technology and not worth the added cost or repair bill when it collapses or cracks.

Lyle, you should have been listening to the Band while you were removing the cast iron: "take a load off, Fanny/take a load for free...." When it's all said and done and you're dog tired, exhausted, and filthy, you can tell us, "oh, you don't know the shape I'm in....."

Buy the cheapest Craig pocket screw jig set with the drill bit included and a C clamp. It worked out really super nicely for me. I made a nice interference fit a plug to go into a large sliding window opening, to install a window air conditioner using that little Craig jig and the drill bit. I used the same jig when I replaced the sills that the termites ate. A duct booster would have worked too, but $250 vs $1200, and I can run a window AC, the lights, a microwave oven, and the refrigerator on 6.5KW gas generator. The rooftop AC would take a 14.5KW generator to start up. I have a gas range, so that's not an elctrical supply issue. Cooking on an electric range? Not my perference.

Homeownership is a busy thing😉👍👍 Remember having to flush out piping for my radiant flooring heat, far from the mains. Hoping all the time cutting up tile and flooring wouldn't be necessary 🤞🤞🤞 Luckily...the pressure flushing worked. Logically, a closed system wouldn't need flushing... RIGHT???🤣🤣

I’m not sure what state your in,but you can wet vent that toilet which means you run your 3” vent stack in the bay behind the toilet and put a 3x1 1/2 “ tee facing a stud or two with a 2” hole/holes and you can run an 1 1/2 arm over to catch your sink… the stack will vent that sink which in turn means you don’t have to also drill more holes at 42” for vent the lower ones for drain and only one fitting on stack instead of two.. Here Chicago your allowed one vent stack per house ,but not sure what your codes are but probably similar? Wet vents are pretty acceptable…. Just trying to give back like you always do to us amp nerds🙏🏻👍🙏🏻👍🙏🏻

I thought about it from just about every angle. Staying with the existing two dry vents, though they’ll actually be working now.

Keep ypur longest run of pipe, install a horn driver on one end and a microphone on the other. Watch youtubers behold your new reverb chamber with envy. If people comment that it sounds like shit you can tell them it's a built-in feature.

Chain pipe cutter. One of the most miserable tools I’ve ever used, as it’s thirty pounds you have to hold at a certain angle with one hand while fighting to get the chain aligned with two argumentative clamps while the chain doesn’t want to play along and then you have to repeat the process to get the chain disengaged after making the cut. But it does snap 4” cast iron in a quite satisfactory manner. Sounds like victory.
