Oooooo. Fish!!! Fantastic. Much better as a Solo artist than in Marillion to be honest as I think this music shows and his singing proves this in my opinion! I always think of Fish is a poet.

Like so much of Fish’s solo stuff after his second album, this is much less a song than meandering semi-poetry stitched together into a “suite”. Best thing about this is Wilson’s guitar work.

He's never been "direct" about the inspiration for this suite. But it's the "visions experienced by a coma victim - who may or may not choose not to return to consciousness" formula [sources for this: an interview and an onstage remark], and writers only use this when responding to some trauma...and besides his succession of much-documented failed relationships, Fish is also (in)famous for enduring multiple near-total-voice-loss experiences (before and after the Raingods album, and later pre-Weltschmerz). It could "really" be about either of these, or something else entirely.

That's crazy. I've just been revisiting this album in the last few days after wearing it out in the day. Love it ! The rest of the album contains more "normal" songs, and a cover of Faith Healer by The Sensational Alex Harvey Band. Great stuff

Jim, you just listened to one of my all time favourite Fish songs/tracks/pieces. There are several other of his tracks that really hit me and you should give them a listen: Cliche, Family Business and The Perception of Johnny Punter, well to be honest, there are three albums that are my "go to" Fish albums amongst the many; Vigil in a Wilderness of Mirrors, Sunsets on Empire and Raingods With Zippos, oh and of course Welsmu, Welshmer, That there latest one that I can't spell!

Uploaded 50 seconds ago but I've given a thumbs up already. It's Fish. What can go wrong? (Unless you slag it off. You're not going to, are you?) Edit: Weird. That finished abruptly. Camera battery run out? Fish's lyrics improved greatly with time. Some early Marillion was very sixth-form poetry but he gained insight and style with experience and allied that with great music. Nice one.

Fish is an artist I have a Love/Hate relationship with. For every great album there's a clunker and I don't think he ever reached the same heights as he did on his very first, the sublime 'Vigil...'. Its a shame that he's packed it in given his last two albums are the strongest since Vigil IMO. There is also 'those' 4 albums, a bar set so high that anything Fish/Marillion did afterwards were always going to be in comparison with and which neither side quite matched.

So much of Fish’s solo material for me has been bang ave at best, indeed the rest of this album is quite poor….BUT ‘plague of ghosts’ wow!!! it’s probably the best body of work fish has ever created under his solo guise and Certainly up there with the Marillion albums. Its an epic song. the words, the musical structure it’s perfect. his career might not have gone the way he necessarily thought it would but every now and then the big man pulls an ace out of his pocket. What a track. Nice one Jim.
