Plain water - but with added sodium carbonate (washing soda). The ratio is 5 gallons water to 1/2 cup washing soda.

Do you have an actual step by step instructions how to initially set this up? I have no idea on which setting to set the battery charger.

It's set on 12V BUT must be an old style manual charger. The new ones won't work. Check KZbin for using a computer power supply or a 12V laptop charger as your "battery charger" as they work too. There's videos here on converting PC power supplies and laptop chargers. Not complicated and cheap. Thrift stores will have cheap laptop power supplies. Be a shame to burn out a good old battery charger and have a dead car battery.
