You should use a wedged tool as well during the packing process to mould better. Just putting the sand and packing it down just creates layers

Wow this is beautiful work. And I don't know if you ever thought of it but it would actually be quite practical for hammering soft things you don't wish to incur too much damage to ie woods, alloys, case hardened things that might fracture etc.

Awesome video. How about doing a casting with just the head, and then comparing a brass head with a wood handle against the original? I'm sure a wood handle would make for a difference in the usage of the hammer as well!

Those hammers are pricey they want 250 bux for one. They are nice though, looks like the one Black Bear forge uses. I personally use a Picard french pattern hammer but I am not a blacksmith. I guess those hammers are like the Snap On tools for blacksmiths. I would chop of the heavy handle portion and punch an eye in it and put a wood handle on. Jmho
