Big Al : your right but usually others estimate the line out. Even others just listen to the reels singing. The big reels dont sound as good as the abu 6500.

Eddie Etheridge : good size to start with. Then as experience progress then taper to smaller diameter/lbs test. Always use shock leader

For casting you csn use as thin as you can as long you’ll be using a shock leader. But also be mindful of the birds nest thin line can gave you. But with this BIG REELS the min siZe/weight i use is 20/25 and even this lines will still find its way in betweennthe spool and the side.

Dylan Feliciano practice casting on an empty beach or open field so you wont be pressured/show off🤔. And just commit to the cast and always prepare yourself for a big birds nest. Thats part of learning. No BS here bud. Prepare yourself for a big birds nest and dont get embarrassed coz you still learning. Also always have a thumb wrap. Dont listen to “experts” telling that you dont need thumb protector. NO BS. And the funny thing is you will always get a big birds nest when you starts to show off😎

akocbombie Thanks for the quick reply. I'm new to surfcasting, but I'm pretty strapped for cash (college student) so I have to use what I got. Any recommendations for videos to help learn how to cast conventional reels? You cast as far as I'd ever need or want to, so I value your advice!

Dylan Feliciano also go to home depot and buy some magnets (little chrome) and hot glue thise on the side plate. Put as many(maybe start with 5 2 layers) and loosen your spool tensioner to just about where it starts to move side to side. And start casting. If it slow your cast then start removing 1 magnet at a time. And always use the same sinker weight 4oz -6oz

akocbombie You use that heavy weight so it is like having a 2-3 oz sinker with bait while practicing? Or should I use these heavier weights all the time? I may try the magnets soon!

Dylan Feliciano i have dfrent setup for dfrent bait. Just like if i’m using bloodworm then i use 4-5 oz sinker on a baitrunner/sliding rig. I also have a setup for bunker head. So i use 5 oz on a polley rig. And i practice acting 8 oz on it on a spinning reel/rod setup. Coz i like punching it. As much as i can on the breakers. Lots of “experts” casting 8 n’ bait on a conventional setup “way beyond the breakers” ALL DAY LONG” And come back the next day and to the same sh#* all over again and again and the next day work 16hs and still smiling. Thats not me!!! Im no expect and claim that i am. Nor trash others when they get birds best or snap a line when casting. Just mu 2cents
