I am disappointed that Tim Burton and Johnny Depp chose to make it into a comedy. If anything this deserves to be rebooted on TV, not on the big screen. Maybe Netflix can do it justice.

I live in Frid's hometown, Hamilton Ontario Canada, and was lucky enough to become good friends with him near the end of his life. He was a terrific actor, and an even better human being, not to mention a dedicated family man. I will always cherish the time we spent together and the many, many important lessons this great man taught me. I met him as a fan, and he made me a friend. He could have told me to beat it, or even humour me with an autograph, but he was just such a decent man.

Darrell, you were lucky. I wish I'd gotten the chance to meet him.His portrayal of Barnabas was the first time anyone has shown a vampire as a gentleman. It's what endeared him to all us young girls and women. A lot of Jonathan's personality came thru, it seems. He scared us, but he fascinated us and we loved him anyway! Such was the power of his personality and his performance.No one else has been a better Barnabas.

Oh my gosh.. I can remember running home from school each afternoon so I could catch the beginning of every episode. You could overlook the actors forgetting their lines, the sets that jiggled when someone slammed a door, the occasional overhead microphone that would sneak into the scene... in fact, they were part of the show's charm. But the plots, and the actors themselves, were so compelling you just couldn't get enough.

Thank you for this awesome post. My dad was Rudy Piccirillo video engineer on DS. I grew up on the set and brought friends there on Halloween. Years later I worked on All My Children and became friends with the great Louis Edmonds.I attend the festivals and Jim Pierson makes them forever magical. I remember when I was 8 years old back in probably 2001. It was summer and I was flipping through the channels at around 8 am when I saw something called Dark Shadows. It was on the black and white episodes about Burke Devlin and the whole Phoenix story line. I liked it and thought it was spooky. I started getting up every morning to watch it because I was intrigued. Eventually I got hooked and ended up watching the show over the next 6 years as it played through the entire series. Eventually I liked it so much I started buying the DVD box sets as they would come out. I am now the proud owner of every single episode and watch the series to this day. I like watching it through at least once a year or every 2 years. Timeless and excellent show that will be apart of my life forever! I really love the series. my grandparents raised me pretty much. my grandmother loved this show. when I was growing up in the '80s and '90s we used to watch this all the time.. my grandmother passed away a couple years ago and it's been very hard. but every time I watch dark shadows it makes me always think of her.... There were a lot of supernatural goings-on in the NBC soap ‘Passions’, which ran from the late 90s to the mid 00s. Like ‘Dark Shadows’ it sought a young audience. The show paid homage to a lot of other shows and movies dealing with the supernatural, like ‘Bewitched’, ‘Alice in Wonderland’, ‘The Wizard of Oz’, ‘Carrie’ and others in a way very similar to the way DS paid homage to literary classics like ‘Dracula’, ‘Jane Eyre’, ‘The Crucible’, ‘The Turn of the Screw’ and ‘The Count of Monte Cristo’. Many prominent actors appeared on ‘Passions’, including Ruth Buzzi, Bernard Fox (who appears as Dr. Bombay, no less), Georgia Engal, Alice Ghostly and Marla Gibbs. ‘Passions’ was inspired by DS and is worth seeking out, in my opinion.

Love DS and yes I was one of the one mile dash home kids too. Watching it all over again on Amazon Prime and 50 years later you see things so differently. Like how did Maggie, Elizabeth and Tom and Chris’ sister get all the way from Windcliff to Collinwood? Wasn’t it 100 miles away? How did Julia complete the “experiment” in the Old House basement with no electricity??? There were oscilloscopes and big lights everywhere lol. The actors all loved each other and had a great time working together. I think given that they had to go live every day with their performances they did a fantastic job. Especially the children, I can’t imagine doing that at 10 years old.

Dark Shadows is sort of a masterpiece of it's era and of the genre that the show created. I remember it as a little kid, my brother and I loved it, we ran from country school across pastures to a neighbour lady's house to watch Dark Shadows on her TV. (our family were bookworms and we were not allowed tv at home). It was intensely scary to us at our age and unforgettable. Dark Shadows has aged very well and is still almost addictively engaging, impressively well done. It's great to see the series again in 2021. The sheer boldness of the storyline was unique and so "out there" that it seems improbable that the show was ever made at all. It just worked, was ahead of its time and now a well loved classic.

My life-long love of Gothic horror began with this marvelous series. I was a little six year old boy and I'd watch it every afternoon after school. It was scary, yes indeed, but it was also so utterly enthralling. I learned fascinating new words----'Curse'. 'Mausoleum'. 'Medallion'. 'Warlock'. 'Beckon'. 'Summon' and many others. It's a shame that contemporary horror films and television shows have abandoned the intrigue, allure, and charm of Gothic suspense and thrills in favor of gore and downright juvenile schlock.

The world is a dark place. We had no idea then, we were all so innocent.

When Dark Shadows was on 1966-1971, I was unable to watch it because we did not have a full ABC affiliate in the area where I lived at that time.( Northeast Missouri). I was so glad when it was put on The Sci-Fi channel. I watched practically every episode( and videotaped most of them.) This was a wonderful show and I enjoyed it very much.

It was posted by some people who knew and worked with Mr. Jonathan Frid . >>>>> "" Mr. Frid was a proud Canadian. When he retired he moved back to Ontario Canada where he had relatives and many friends. Jonathan Frid never married ( obviously ) and he never adopted any kids. He said that while he loved his brother's children, he did not want any of his own. Mr. Frid is survived by his beloved cousins and his brother's children, and by his Grand niece and nephews who loved and adored him. They called him 'Uncle John'. He was dearly loved. Mr. Frid was not a religious man so there was no ceremony after he died. He never liked to be fussed over and he did not want a funeral nor a memorial. He preferred to be remembered alive and enjoying life. Mr. Frid did not want a final resting place in fear of the many obsessive fans he had who would seek out the grave of 'Barnabas Collins' and set up memorials and write graffiti about his character. He didn't want fans to put him up on a pedestal like a movie idol. He never wanted that kind of attention. Jonathan Frid said that many fans had trouble separating him, the actor from the character he had played. Fans would address him as Barnabas instead of his real name and they'd ask him a lot of 'vampire' related questions. He did not want those kinds of obsessive fans to bother his relatives . Mr. Frid would often say that he was nothing like his Barnabas character. He also stated several times that he would like to be remembered for more than just his work on Dark Shadows. Mr. Frid had twenty years of acting experience before he even appeared on the Dark Shadows TV show. He also spent several years performing his dramatic readings in his reader's theater and in his one-man shows . He also toured with the play, Arsenic and Old Lace with actors Marion Ross, Jean Stapleton and Larry Storch. Mr. Jonathan Frid was so much more than just his Barnabas character. He is missed by his relatives, friends , fans and by his community. R I P .""

Rewatching the series Dark Shadows for our podcast, I have been a huge fan since the age of 6, rushing home from work. It was my first exposure to horror and I have been a love of it ever since. Dark Shadows had some of the best storylines and considering the way they put this classic together - filming live and new script everyday, nothing will ever surpass it and nothing will ever equal this. I am just glad they were able to preserve every episode. It's now on Amazon Prime in its entirety.

I think it was not so much the story that intrigued me while watching Dark Shadows as a 12 year old. It was the actors who brought the interesting characters to life. I loved Jonathan Frid's analysis of himself and Barnabas. Also, the person who did the Julia Hoffman skit is spot on!

It is interesting that Katherine Leigh Scott mentioned in this great film review of "Dark Shadows" (including interviews with the cast members) that it got very confusing for fans of the show and for the actors and actresses themselves, as to the time period the characters were in during certain stories in the show because the show used the parallel time feature so often (really too often). A well-know anecdote about the show is that there were times during "Dark Shadows" original broadcast run when the producers or writers of the show had to resort to inviting fans standing outside the ABC tv studios in NYC to come into the studio to help the production crew figure out if a character would know something from a previous time period or if a particular line of dialogue or an action by a character was accurate in terms of continuity, etc.

I was a little too young to get into Dark Shadows when it first aired. However as I loved horror stuff I sort of put the show on a mental shelf and intended to revisit it one day. Later I saw the both Dark Shadow original movies. Many years after that I found a Dark Shadows documentary (not this one) on VHS and watched it quite often. Loved the Dan Curtis interview where he explains the show's origin. That documentary always made me feel I wanted to lose myself roaming the dark halls of Collinwood come what may!

All these years later we now know it had nothing to do with Johnny Depp It was the famed film Producer Richard D Zanuck who wanted the film, his film, to be a Family Friendly comedy or parody and Mr. Zanuck had stated that in a posted interview. He did not want another serious gory slasher type vampire film like the Abraham Lincoln vampire killer movie that was around the same time. he wanted it to be lighthearted for the family to enjoy. So it's on Zanuck's head and now he's dead.

Yes, it was big in the late 80s into the 90s and every day, driving home from work, I'd stop by good ole Block Busters and rent a slew of VHS tapes. I was mesmerized all over again. The show had great actors and superlative music and writers.

I was in 8th grade in 1966 when Dark Shadows hit the air waves. Right from the beginning I was intrigued by Victoria's story: a foundling searching for clues to her own parentage and past. Then came Josette's ghost & Laura the Phoenix, and I loved the series even more for these supernatural elements. Finally Barnabas made his first (dramatic) appearance, and once DS began to travel back in time to other centuries it became my all-time favorite show!

Barnabas Collins was my idol! I knew that he was was not an evil person but rather a tortured soul under a terrible curse. Were my family and friends surprised when they found this out because they had given me such a bad time about telling them that Barnabas really was a good person! I introduced my son to DS when he was in grade school and he was hooked. In his honors English class in high school he had to find photos of famous stage versions of Shakespeare plays. He found photos of a production where Jonathan Frid played Lord Capulet in “Romeo and Juliet”. Both of us were so excited to see them. When he showed the photos of Frid his teacher and classmates all yelled “Barnabas!” A lot of the kids had no idea that Frid had a life outside of DS.

Barnabas simply took the "lemons", in his life's predicament, and made "lemonade" bountifully, putting his vampire powers and keen mind to good use, mounting direct attacks against those who injured him, and threatened to destroy all of the other Collinses. Sometimes he might have to wait awhile for the right moment to strike, but once he did , it was "curtains forever, baby"!!

I use to run home at lunch time with my sister to watch dark shadows. I was 10 years old and my sister was 13. I loved this show and am now re watching the series on tv. I never read the books.

I love Dark Shadows...I watched it as it first ran on TV...now I own the entire original series on DVD and I can watch it whenever I want! I had an aunt (that I could not stand) we were not allowed to watch DS at her house. She didn't want us to have nightmares... I never had a nightmare about DS or any horror movie or TV show. Nor did my brothers or sister. Why? Because my parents raised intelligent children who understood the difference between reality and non-reality. THAT'S WHY!

Many kids are affected by tv shows or movies. I did not watch it in those days but now I think it was HORRIBLE for Barnabas to put a live Maggie in his coffin and him constantly strangling Julia.

I loved Dark Shadows!!! I would glue myself to the show every day! Then I found the next days episode on a fuzzy channel!!!! We didn't have cable back in those days. Lol 😂

Dark Shadows was the best soap opera ever as far as I'm concerned. It was the only soap I'd ever watch. So glad that when it first aired back in 1966 I was working a late evening shift so I was still home to view it. In the late 1980's when the SciFi Channel started their broadcast, they showed Dark Shadows every morning at 8am for an hour and I recorded most of it. Still have the recordings on VHS tapes. Also have the 4 cassettes tapes for the music by Robert Cobert, the book on the introduction of Barnabas Collins and a few photos of Barnabas, Victoria Winters and the old house. The only thing I didn't like about the show is when they decided to colorize it. The gaudy colors (especially the greens) were so distracting. The only time the colorization was good was when they went back in time and were at the Old House before Barnabas was cursed, as the dresses, jewelry and the décor of the house for the era was great. I only kept the recordings up to the colorization. Thank you for sharing as I've never seen this documentary.

@@windymoore4009 I used to watch it on the SciFi Chanel, too. It was a thrill to revisit that period of my life ; I was 9 years old when Dark Shadows originally aired. Some people have comfort foods, I have comfort shows. Dark Shadows is at the top of that list.

I,also, was one of those kids who ran home from school(Coggeshall Elementary School in Newport, Rhode Island). Came close to missing some episodes, but, I NEVER DID!!! Hard to believe almost 55 years have passed since it debut in 1966.🤔🤔✌✌✌

I first saw Dark Shadows in a Sunday morning 3 am timeslot on Channel 19 out of Ohio that I could pick up on my rabbit ears in the mid 1980's. This was back before there was 24 hour programming and most channels would sign off by this time. It was in the Quentin ghost arc with the telephone. I recognized Denise Nickerson from her role in Willy Wonka so I kept watching and got hooked. I would wake up and watch as much as I could as I was still 7 or 8 years old at the time. I am so happy that in 2021, all of these episodes are on Tubi.tv and Amazon Prime to watch. What other soap opera (TV Drama) is still being watched 45 years after it first aired? Only Dark Shadows! Long Live Collingwood!

Jonathan Frid was not an original cast member of Dark Shadows. He joined midway through the first season. Comparing Dark Shadows to another popular serial drama from later on, Frid's Barnabas Collins became to Dark Shadows what Larry Hagman's J.R. Ewing was to Dallas. Love him, hate him, viewers tuned in to see what he was going to do next.

You'll probably yell at me for this but I think barnabas is really more comparable to Steve Urkel from family matters. Both shows started as one thing but with the intro of these two characters became something completely different.

I began watching this show when it premiered - before entering kindergarten! My mom would draw the family room drapes at my request for ambience. After kindergarten, I detested having to stay in school all day because I would miss half of Dark Shadows. No matter how fast I ran home, fifteen minutes of the story was already in progress. I received the board game for Christmas the year Milton Bradley issued it and used the fangs and the ring to reenact scenes from the show.

How wonderful to see all the hoopla from the great fans, I was very young when dark shadow's was on TV,my mom was addicted to the show therefore so was I as a boy of only 4 years of age, When Johnathon Frid came on as Barnabas Collins, Wow a monster nothing a little boy loves more then a real monster on one of mom's soap operas! l was so young but because of Barnabas I became a real fan my active memory of the show started at that point but because of getting started with school and my young age there were many gaps in my memories, So when ever there were stations running re broadcasts I jumped at the chance to catch up even buying the video tapes and filling in the gaps that way courtesy of mpi home entertainment, but even they were missing Many episodes! So frustration continues one day I hope to catch up in its glorious entirety great Job to the late Dan Curtis Rest in peace Johnathan Frid and Joan Bennet Dark Shadows has created a life ambition to one day watch it in its entirety .

I remember watching dark shadows all the time when it was on television back then and it wad great to watch because it was different and unique in many ways from other shows at the time because of the subject and the the way the story was told I doubt that anyone would be able or willing to do a show like that again, because unless you had seen the original show, you might not enjoy it or even understand it because of the way it was done back then. In any event, it was great to watch this video for the first time and see barnabas collins again.

You know, there were two movies, "House of..." and "Night of..." with the latter being the weaker of the two. "House of..." is a great primer to introduce anyone to the TV series.

Say what one will about the goofy 1980s, at LEAST a presentation like this shows most being interviewed in a level of comfort, wanting who is speaking to be comfortable, as opposed to much later in which we get grueling with entertainers and go all out to make them as uncomfortable and nervous as possible to get a cheap thrill of some kind as if Joey Grecco is out to browbeat a cheater or whatever. Glad to be re exposed to this sense of comfort. Thank you for the upload!

I used to come home every day after school to the old black and white TV upstairs to watch Dark Shadows. I wasn't supposed to watch it because it gave me nightmares, but I couldn't help it, I was addicted! When the scary scenes came on I would peek through my fingers. Years later I watched late one night and it was kind of funny. Props that looked like they would weigh thousands of pounds would wobble when an actress accidently walked to close, sometimes people had problems remembering their lines and I suspect one person on the set had a drinking problem. I still loved it though and still do!

I have never seen this before and enjoyed it immensely ! It is wonderful to get a sense of how the various actors viewed their characters and the show. I had the pleasure of meeting Jonathan Frid several years ago. He was a funny, kind, and very humble man with a great talent. He really did appreciate all those who supported his career through the years. Once again thank you. I can't believe this isn't available on DVD ! All the best friend!

I've only just discovered the Dark Shadows TV show and I am completely addicted! It's so nice that the show keeps you on your toes and ran for soooooo long! I have finally found the first episode so I may have to watch it again from the start. I also like how they use the same actors for different characters and even how they seamlessly reintroduce the same character into different spaces in time.
