we had the best music, period. '90s kids were BUILT on great game music. I knew at the time it was good, I loved it, but I didn't really know it was going to BE it. as good as video game music can be these days, nothing compares to the simple melodies instructed on us as kids. I don't weep for 2000's kids, because I'm sure they have THEIR unbeatable game music they grew up on, but man . . . I dunno, I kind of feel we were spoiled. Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Sonic the Hedgehog 1, 2 and 3, Mega Man X, Super Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII . . . this is THE shit, man. and sorry to go on and on, but the HITS go on and on. look at the list of greatest games released in the '90s and it's kind of ridiculous. I remember when _Halo_ came out, everyone was going nuts on the music, but even by then for me the magic had passed. because it was CD quality by then - it was just Movie Music, but now on a Video Game. something about the 8-bit / 16-bit limitations made the music better. tighter and more focused on melody instead of mood. which MADE the mood. even when we go back and try to rekindle that 8-bit retro music it's almost always missing that next level push for me. because we're _trying_ to make retro music. when they were composing whatever - _Super Mario World,_ they weren't going for "Okay, let's do a cool retro composition here", they were thinking "Okay, now what's the absolute limit to the technology available to us? How far can we push those 16 bits? how good can we make this music without breaking the consoles?"
