The Castle rising on a hilltop above the Töss was first mentioned in documents in 1027. However, it has already existed before that.
The original name Chuigeburg, which means so much as cows-castle, indicates a refuge. Liutfried II of Winterthur was the suspected builder.
Count Werner of Winterthur and Ernst of Schwaben, who were involved in the rebellion against Emperor Contrad II, fled to the castle in 1025. Two years later it was conquered and destroyed by the emperor.
After the Winterthur died out in the middle of the 11th century, Count Hartmann I. von Dillingen came in possession of Kyburg castle and it’s goods through marriage. He expanded on both and called himself Hartmann of Kyburg from then on. In addition to the Habsburgs and the Savoy family, this family was the most important aristocratic family in the Swiss midlands.
Rudolf von Habsburg secured his inheritance as the Kyburg family died out in 1264. The imperial jewels were kept in the castle from 1273 to 1325, after he was elected as the King of Germany.
The City of Zürich bought the County in 1436 after the Habsburg shifted their interests to Carinthia and Lower Austria. The Kyburg served as the seat of the bailiwick from then on. Distinguished citizens of Zurich were in office as Stewards for six years in the castle. They held courts and drove the royalties.
The beginning of the Helvetic Republic ended the era of the bailiwicks. Peasants occupied Kyburg castle In March 1798 and looted it. However, the last steward Hans Caspar Ulrich was granted free deduction.
The castle came into the possession of private owners from 1832. Among them, for example, was the Polish Count of Sobansky, who spent his remaining years there.
The Canton of Zurich bought back the castle in 1917. Today it is a museum.
