I leveled this game to lvl 99 on my GBA SP back in the day. I don't remember how many hours I spend farming the "Lilith" monster in that one room. I think I defeated Dracula with only two cockatrice summons on that level.

I always thought this one was the best looking of the gba games which is impressive considering it was also the first one and a launch title for the console. The animations look so smooth, music isn't as compressed imo and really good arrangements. Also the gameplay is very fun thanks to the cards mechanic and the whip feels great lol. Again, just my opinion but I feel like saying it because, for some reason, many people thinks that this game is one of the weakest, no just of the gba collection, but the whole franchise

I see your point. I don't think it's bad, I think it's frustrating. It tried to be a Metroidvania with a Classicvania mentality and it didn't always work. The lack of an item shop made the game much harder and time consuming than it should be and you had to be really good to not die between save points. Running was very clunky and the castle was super vertical. Bosses were tough because healing was almost impossible if you didn't have the necessary cards and even if you had them, you would have to find a safe spot to heal and that was hard most times. The game barely explains its mechanics and I've known players who have beaten it without even knowing that you could summon. The visuals and music were great, but I think that not everyone liked it because it was frustrating for the wrong reasons. But it's much better than Harmony of Dissonance for sure

@@christianrogers4980 Ok, after reading your comment I can say that now I understand a little bit more the reason behind its hate. Regarding the shop, I think the devs decided to go with a RPG-like formula with the addition of random drops, something that I have seen fans with mixed opinions. Personally, I didn't mind the shop as I'm very good with resource management so I rarely buy things but I understand many fans being upset at the absence of a stapple mechanic such as the shop. Running I feel it was great as the D pad of the gba made it very easy but I´ll admit the game was very vertical oriented which I also disliked haha. Regarding bosses, I really liked the fact that they were challenging as I have always thought bosses were on the easier side before, but healing was kinda scarce so I can see other people having trouble. One way of dealing with it is just grinding for levels but this can also be tedious. Here's where the card system comes into play but for some reason many people still find it difficult? Tbh this always confuses me because there are lots of broken combinations, and healing whenever you want with the stand still combination card helps so you don't waste hp restoring items unless it is a boss battle. I can understand people not knowing how to activate some specific combinations like the summon ones because those required a specific command that the game didn't tell you at all, though. Well, after all I think it might come down to personal preferences. I know many people that like the game for the same reasons I like it: card collecting, armor farming, smooth animations, faster gameplay, etc. But I guess I wasn't looking back at the things that were stripped and many fans struggled with. Not saying it is the best Castlevania, it's just that I don't see it as the worst as many people claim it is.

@@seth7726 very true is all about personal preference. I can take the higher difficulty but also can see why others didn't enjoy it. To me the worst offender is the lack of explanations. The card system is a life saver and can break the game, problem is, the game barely tells you how it works. The skills are only explained in the menu after you activate them once. So yeah, a lot of Googling. But I 100% agree with you. It has its issues but it's not bad and not the worst at all. It doesn't deserve all that hate.Harmony of Dissonance is much worse Imo, the original Game Boy Castlevanias are pretty bad and bland as well I would say

I started playing that game on the Castlevania Advance Collection. I've never been much of a Castlevania fan aside from liking Super Castlevania IV but that game isn't bad. I I think I also want to play one of the 3D ones like Lament of Innocence. I think I also have Lord's of Shadow
