Perhaps it has to do with the colors and the grainy look, making things a lot more darker. Plus when you are younger you are a lot more impressionable. I bet a lot of gamers of today wouldn't see the atmosphere you see.

I wish I wasn't so terrible at these games, the Castlevania games always looked like a lot of fun to me, I just really find them difficult sometimes. Same applies for the Contra games.

Lol when I was younger beating Contra was a staple of having any respect as a gamer, have you tried Double Dragon 3, Ninja Gaiden 1-3 or Ghost and Goblins now those are hardies!

Dreco Double Dragon 3... Lol! I did find a way when I was playing it on NES a few years back and got to the last stage, I think it was just using the spin kick over and over once you master the enemy placement. Bosses are still a pain through when they dodge it....
