Galagaweekend seriously, why the hell people say the same about almost all games that are "underrated"? this is by far the most well known of the 3 Castlevanias DS even among non Castlevana fans (the same with Curse of Darkness, I remember it was a hugh success and even non Castlevana fans loved that game) Lament of Innoncene and Order of Ecclessia are probably the most forgotten and truly underrated games of the "Metroidvania" games

The DS Castlevania titles are some of the best in the series, imo. About 4 or 5 years ago I picked up a DS with Pokémon Soul Silver and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia, which was my first Castlevania game since the days of the NES when I barely paid any attention to the series, and ever since I've played every Castlevania title I can get my hands on, and while I love all the different "flavors" of Castlevania games from the NES to the GBA, the DS titles remain my favorites.

@XavierOver-01 I've to agree with you. SOTN is overrated as shit. People give attentions to SOTN too much to the point the other great hidden gems Castlevania metroidvanias are barely noticed. I love SOTN so much but it's not my top Castlevania game. I can't deny that SOTN has some laughable flaws but it weirded me out how it still becomes overhyped and overrated even though there are other better metroidvanias after it.

It's my favorite still of the 3 DS Castlevania games they made. It had the right balance of difficulty, gameplay, and storyline to be the best one IMO. Ecclesia was too hard for it's own good in many spots, and DoS got boring quickly for some reason.

I just can't choose what my favorite Castlevania is. I liked how you could play the two different characters (and how gameplay forced you to play one or the other) and I also just loved the places you went thanks to the portraits. I didn't like Dawn of sorrows that much. I don't know why. Order of Ecclesia is one of my favorites for sure. Jonathan is boring to use by himself though, since his whole thing really is just thrusting a weapon and a subweapon, not like Soma's Souls, Shanoa's Glyphs and Alucards....every gameplay mechanic ever

+Princess Lucina I have to disagree. While the variety of sub-weapons feels lacking at times, (which is partly the result of having a separate magic user Charlotte by his side,) Jonathan has the most realistic weapon systems among the 3 DS Castlevania in my opinion, especially when compared to Shanoa's magic based attacks and Soma's weird short sword arc and, well, guns. Also, cancelling long attack animation (Great Sword/Axe) has always been an important technique in this series, so it's not just about thrusting weapon and throwing shuriken from the ground. (warning, text dump below) Soma's Soul system is not exactly much better. Red souls are just fancy sub-weapons, blue souls are rather annoying if you have to hold the button instead of just triggering once (Black Panther versus Speed Up/Rapidus Fio), yellow souls are passive and they are honestly worse than having multiple equipment slots for the flexibility. So yeah, Soma is most likely not better than Jonathan. I have mixed feeling about the next playstyle of Shanoa, so I won't argue whether she or Jonathan is better. Here is what I think: Shanoa's Glyph system is rather different than what Castlevania fans are used to, making it hard to compare easily. Facts are that Shanoa does not use weapons, so you rarely get rare drops that are game-changers combat-wise. Sub-weapons is gone, meaning you will have to switch back and forth if you wanna change from lance thrust to throwing axe. On the plus side, Left/Right Glyphs have their power scaling with your level, meaning you can still use old glyphs in late-game. Attack pace is mostly determined by your button pressing speed, which makes battle much more intense in my opinion. Back Glyphs are like quicker version of Charlotte's spell, and Glyph Unions are more accessible than Dual Crush, considering how swift they are and doesn't use up your MP for normal attacks.

Huh, I guess that makes sense. I guess what I was trying to say was his aesthetics and animations seem slightly boring. Charlotte casts spells, Soma is basically a vampire with both weapons and a whoooole lot of cool looking skills from enemies, Alucard with pretty much everything (including inputting spells fighter game style, which I actually likes for some reason haha) and Shanoa with using magical glyphs to summon weapons or magic. Meanwhile Johnathan, like most of the Belmonts, just uses some weapons and a subweapon that doesn't look really fancy. I'm just a whore for aesthetic and mystical stuff haha

This is the most artful use of cel shading I have ever seen. Why don't modern anime use this technique? One would think it would save tons of money while preserving the quality of the animation. With cut and paste models and keyframes you could create a really nice looking show.
