Castlevania on Netflix has released season 3, and we're in a much different place than season 1. Here are my thoughts on it. #Castlevania

My favorite scene in Season 3 was Isaac's discussion with The Captain. It's such an amazing dialogue. The Captain is actively challenging Isaac's view on humanity, not necessarily by pointing out the flaws in his logic, but by showing him what he's been blind to because of his rage. Showing Isaac that because he's so fixated on the acts of malice committed by humanity, he keeps forgetting about the humans that have willingly helped him because they wanted to. If Isaac hates how ignorant and scared people are, instead of slaughtering humanity, he could potentially save it by becoming a teacher, showing everyone to be more willing and able to understand others. Isaac is routinely shown both of these aspects of humanity, which is exactly why he's struggling so much as a person. It's why every time he enters a new town, his guard is momentarily let down because a prior act of kindness shown to him makes him believe for just a singular moment that there's hope in humanity. Then it swiftly gets crushed by the masses. What a great fuckin' scene.

I thought Sypha and Trevors arc was pretty amazing. She’s just a bubbly adventurer and he knows better, but let’s himself get caught up in her energy. By the end, she’s come crashing down with the realization of how dark the world really is and Trevor has fully sunk back into those feelings. Then adding Alucard starting to walk his fathers path and you have some stellar setup... and that’s just the main characters!

Honestly, I liked most of their arc, but the reveal of the Judge as a bad guy at the end, was just unnecessary. It felt like an attempt to be edgy for the sake of it. I get that they were building it up subtly, but literally that was a step too far down nihilism street

It wasn't pointless...he served as a means to develop Sypha and see that the world is fucked up. Why Trevor even drinks in the first damn place. Also, I think they wanted you to like The Judge so that you'll feel like shit too when you learn the truth. That said, this series has always pushed a mean spirited gorey nature that was never in the games. Yeah, you kill demons and shit, but it was never gorey or mean spirited. It is the one thing I both hate and love about the adaptation. Just once, I'd like Bloody Tears/Vampire Killer to play during an action scene but because of how the tone is so dark, it really doesn't seem like it would fit. Maybe the world will become more peaceful and normal by the time Simon Belmont is born. And the seried could earn that track, but for now, I feel like these guys would have done better with a Bloodborne anime. Something that is dark by nature, and has this whole other world...the creatures looked more like that, than they ever did Castlevania enemies. But that's just me. It's a guilty pleasure...on the one hand, this is exactly how I used to imagine an adaptation would look like, so I'm 50/50. As long as they tell a good story.

After season 2, he did know better. Initially, he didn't trust Lenore at all, he saw through her early attempts to manipulate him, and he even hatched an escape plan that only failed because Lenore can turn into a swarm of bats at will. @@JMsaintmilo96 He's the hero that defected from Dracula, it's only jarring because we're all more familiar with the story of a guy that had his resolve clear from the moment we knew him, not the guy that out of grudge agreed to help Dracula cull mankind for being outcasted. Yet his conviction wasn't as big as Isaac's, he hates to dirty his hands by directly harming others, prefers the company of animals since they have no complex feelings like hatred, and he brought them back binding them through devil forgery because he couldn't accept death. He was bound to be a guy with very low self steem for his background to make sense, and unfortunately for him instead of finding someone that genuinely connected with him like originally happened, here he fell in the hands of schemers that exploited his immature desire of a life without consequences.

Season's moral lesson: Dont stick your d**k in crazy . I bet the vampire blacksmith that made Hector's slave ring will help him remove it and make him vampire killing gear. Hector liked the book given to him by Lenore and even complimented its contents but Lenore said later on that the book belongs to the blacksmith which maybe a hint that the blacksmith is a wise vampire. Further dialog hints also that the blacksmith is oppressed in their kingdom and is just treated as a tool. And if this series will follow some of the ideas in the game... Hector IS a vampire hunter.

In a way though, it's kinda right. Castlevania was never this mean spirited nor was it ever gorey, gross, or sex driven. Even Lords of Shadow never got as messed up visually as the anime does, and that's the one that got the mature rating. It is both the reason I love and hate this adaptation. It's most certainly how I imagined Castlevania would be adapted growing up, but at the same time, this isn't the Castlevania I grew up with. It's not the kinda atmosphere that lends itself to the music of the games, so we're likely never going to hear some of the most famous tracks or tunes. So, already a big chunk of what made the games is missing. But at the same time, I kinda really like where they're going with it.

I've posted this a few times on other reviews, but oh well. Here we go: Don't obsess over the sex. People need to understand that Alucard craves for human interaction or at least someone who can accept and maybe even understand the pain he's going through. Up until then, I don't think he even had any experience with being deceived in such a way. And loved? He thinks he doesn't deserve to be even seen as a person who should be loved, let alone can be. Imagine having to guard your dead father's magical castle (killed by you no less), the Belmont hold and trying to survive freaking eternity! What?! Please, the show perfectly portrayed a young self-loathing man on the brink of suicide. Again, don't obsess over the sex. Obsess over the fact how much this betrayal has wounded him and probably closed his heart for anyone coming his way in the future.

He talked to the captain who treated him with kindness and gave him the "not all humans" talk which seemed to give Isaac food for thought but then immediately abandoned the idea when a bunch of humans refused to let him walk his hell squad through their town again. I see your point but I think that the arc was incredibly needed for Alucard. He's learned that he was too trusting with humans and has started to sink into the emotions and actions of Dracula. @ichaelis But that is kind of cliche and shallow. His game backstory is basically the same as Dracula's. Here he is being broken before being built back up. Dude is a traitor and they are sent to the lowest level of hell which may be what the show is going for.

The only thing I was disappointing by was Alucard's storyline, the beginning and middle of it was great. But the ending came out of nowhere, I get that Sumi and Taka were getting suspicious of Alucard but that entire bedroom scene just made me feel confused at the direction they were going. They should've just had Alucard train them and then they go off to help their people, they could've even be the starting point for "The Agency" in present day Japan. Then Alucard could go into a depressed slumber until Dracula gets resurrected and the events of SOTN start.

I see it like this. Alucard is still practically a child at this point in terms of maturity. He’s been spoiled by Trevor and Sypha being such good people that he doesn’t have first hand experience of just how cruel humans can be. (Dead mom aside) And with how lonely and isolated he was, it’s no surprise that he was deceived to such an extent. (Preeetty sure Dracula had more than his fair share of betrayals that hardened his heart to any humans before his wife) The sex just added onto the layers of deception; They fully took advantage of him in every way. This will definitely lead to a wiser, hardened, more violent Alucard in the future.

i don't think the last 2 eps of this season would've been as impactful if we didn't have so much character building for all the cast in the other eps. at first i was kind of let down but after really thinking on it, this season was brilliant. like in another comment section of a vid showing trevor and sypha's relationship, someone said it would've been better if they kissed since hector and alucard got kisses as well and full on sex scenes. then i countered with this: true, hector and alucard got some on-screen kisses and sex but they got them from people who didn't really care about them and in the end, betrayed them. on the flip side, trevor and sypha never say they are a couple, never do PDAs, outside of holding hands, never kiss and never have a sex scene together, even though we see them sleeping together. but yet, they trust each to the degree that such actions are not needed. trevor: sypha.......do you have my back? sypha: always.

Hector is just too naive to be real. He gets beaten all the way from Brela to Styria and he still let's his guard down. It's just bad. Anyone who's treated like that will never be that trusting. You're made to walk all that way, beaten, cold showered, beaten by the woman who is supposed to be diplomatic, no way you'll trust them again.
@ascalon80014 жыл бұрын
You might not fully realize the situation he was in. I actually liked this part of it. People who do not have strong convictions, ambitions or sense of purpose will be inherently more easily swayed because the mind looks for something to cling onto. And while being beaten and humiliated might make you more insecure it also breaks down your self-esteem and resolve which makes you more prone to manipulation in its own way. Although you might think Hector should know that them not killing him and letting him live is a tactical move, the mind does not care and it will affect him nonetheless. It is really interesting to analyze these things and see really how malleable our minds can be. Such things happen in real life too, a famous example might be the girl kidnapped by the urban guerillas or something and then joining them willingly after being locked in a closet and manipulated for a month or two.

What happened to both Alucard’s parents and himself is an unfathomable tragedy, all three of them. We can’t even begin to understand what it would be like to be Alucard, it’s very compelling. Dracula was also just as lonely in season 2, being surrounded by vampires and demons didn’t help.
@budgethero4hire124 жыл бұрын
The only thing that bugs me in this season is how little Trevor gets to interact with the world in general. Story just sort of sets him in a passive pace so the rest of the characters and lore can flourish.. it's fine, but as a Belmont fan I feel like there was not nearly enough forces of evil being whipped into non-shape. Him relishing the chance to unload on the creepy monks and unsuccessfully hide a body in a barrel was quite fun. Sypha was fantastic, as was the narrative of the story arc coming full circle from the plucky life of an adventurer to whoops, everybody sucks, is dead, or somewhere in between. Here's hoping when season 4 manifests our heroes still have some fire within to keep things going and do not simply sulk and brood as everything comes apart at the seems.
@buntado64 жыл бұрын
Kililng Dracula was the main mission his lineage inherited. With that done, and not being very appreciated by that anyways because of Leon's fallout with the church, maybe he didn't feel that necessary anymore, letting Sypha lead. I don't know if living "his way" means he'll retake that, or will search isolation like Alucard.

I think they made a nod to Grant this season when Trevor refers to bumping into an idiot who put wheels on a boat and called himself, "The pirate of the roads". Apparently, they didn't want to put Grant in the show because they thought a pirate is out-of-place in landlocked Wallachia.

To be fair Alucard has always been that way, though most people wouldn't know unless they have access to the VERY old audio dramas and the original Japanese Symphony of the Night since the translation makes him sound somewhat "cooler" (PS > I'm really hoping this anime is so successful we get to see later generations, specially the Richter and Simon storylines.)
