Yay! You're back! I was worried. Castlevania II is my favorite for all the wrong reasons. It's objectively the worst of the NES games but it was the one I had. Because of that, it's my fav through sheer nostalgia alone.

This whole hour of Castlevania goodness was well worth the wait. Always a treat to catch your videos.

And scoff at cosplay all you want, but my Captain N Simon at Portland Retro Gaming Expo got the guy who runs the Nintendo Power museum exhibit to ask me to pose holding the Dracula mask from the cover of issue two. What a day that was!

I love how you always get deep into the nuts-and-bolts about anything you cover, without being too dry about it. These retrospectives are always a fun and funny journey!

He's back! Glad to see more videos from you. Also for some reason my message didn't show up initially and KZbin did a default "Thanks!" hah.
@prolefeed1016 ай бұрын
Thanks for the "Thanks!" as well as the generosity. It means a lot. There won't be as long a gap between videos in the future hopefully.

"Goodness" is subjective. Meandering, repetitive, gassy...I think those are apt descriptors.

He's back! Hey, this video is EPIC - am I right, guys? What a great comeback though! I think the first Castlevania is the best one in the whole series, let alone the NES series. It's just too good and can never be topped. It didn't have to add anything new to the series, because it was the first one. Everything in it is essential. The rest of the games had to try to be innovative and added mostly unessential stuff. As for II and III, they're both great but I play the improved version of II with most of the flaws addressed and I play the third game with the Japanese music and with all the stages in linear order, because I want to play all the levels in one playthrough. ROM hackers are awesome.

My god the first Castlevania game is truly a masterpiece. The only other thing I think that it does incredibly well that you didn't go into detail on would be the setting. I abdsolutely adore how the entirety of the game takes place in ONE castle. The designers must have spent so much time before even beginning the game just laying out Dracula's castle and coming up with different rooms to keep the player interested while still sticking to the same theme. It's so easy for games to have the ice level, the desert level, the lava level etc. but Castlevania went hard on a single setting, on limited hardware, and still made every level unique and memorable. Each level having its own theme certainly helps contribute to that feeling

Trying not to spoil myself since I haven't played 2 or 3 yet but I couldn't help myself to the first part for 3. Loving the VO and script, man. Was thinking about how good Castlevania was this morning when I woke up.

I'm a CVIII man because sometimes more is more, but there's no denying a perfect little 20-30 minute nugget of action-platforming bliss has its place. And yeah, the NA difficulty is sick, but that oddly endeared it to me in the end. To the point where I can clear it without continuing now. Will I ever get a no death run like I have with CV1? Probably not, but it's still something to aspire to.

I freggin KNEW you were going to say Wicked Child! Have you heard the Micon theme from the original Megami Tensei for Famicom? It almost feels like cheerier remix. Also, I completely agree with you about the jumping in Castlevania 1. After decades of replaying it I can practically get to the Grim Reaper with my eyes closed, but recently I tried a romhack with "modernized jumping." It wasn't my cup of tea.

Great video, do you think you can do video of Rank'n'review of the 16 bit Castlevanias? And are you fan of Ghouls n ghosts? Thank you! 😊
@prolefeed1019 күн бұрын
I'm going to cover those in separate videos. Eventually every Castlevania will be tackled. I respect the Ghouls n Ghosts n Ghosts n Ghouls n Ghosts n Ghouls series is one I appreciate from afar. They're important but I'm so awful at them. I covered that in my Master System Horror game video.

Spot on assessment, brother. Ever since playing Castlevania 1 at Pizza Hut on one of those sit down table screen machines, I've been forever hooked. Perhaps I'll beat it someday. If you have the chance, I highly recommend seeing the band Bit Brigade. They play NES game soundtracks while someone plays it on stage and change the songs as the person plays the game. They tour often and frequently play Castlevania 1. Unless, of course you already know of Bit Brigade, then kick ass. Or just check em out here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/e5zYm2xmiKeWeJI
