Ms Carol is AMAZING! She memorizes these long, long, complex solos, and plays them impeccably, while other soloists have to have the charts in front of them. Bravissimo!

I used to be a military tuba player (US Army) and played prolifically most of my life. Playing tuba is a great love of mine. I got terminally ill with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis a few years ago and could no longer play. Last year I was blessed to have had a double lung transplant and am currently teaching my new lungs (and embouchure) how to play again. I listen to Carols' you tube performances for inspiration. There are others I listen to as well, but Carols' tone is one I endeavor to emulate. Much love and thanks.

You play with such graceful lyricism. It's always a pleasure to hear you.

Carol, you have the most beautiful, singing tone I have ever heard on the tuba. And in all registers, too! Wonderful performance.

I have to ask, have you heard Roger Bobo, Gene Pokorny, Patrick Sheridan, Chester Schmitz, Warren Deck, Floyd Cooley? She sounds good, no doubt, but I don't think her tone matches any of the aforementioned players.
@leonardvaughan6757 жыл бұрын
I am sure the perception of tone is subjective. Yes, I have heard the others you mention, and I still think Carol's tone is the best.
@westonharby1657 жыл бұрын
She came to the University of Denver and played with the wind band. She is a monster, no doubt about that. You mentioned Warren Deck, he said, "No doubt about Carol, she is the real deal." Check yourself before you talk shit about a tubist that one a professional orchestra at 19.
@triangularplanet24247 жыл бұрын
If saying she dosen't have the tone of the legendary tubists I mentioned is considered "talking shit" I question your knowledge of tuba history. 99.9% of tuba players don't come close to them. She won a professional job at 19 means she was better than the tubists that showed up; it doesn't mean she's better than the greatest players to ever pick up the instrument!

Pfft. I'd put her in the category of the rest and definitely better than one on your list.

And standing. Too bad the sound recording wasn't better, but even with sub-optimal recording, she sounds fantastic.

The longer I listened to it, the more certain I am that the deficiencies in sound are solely because of the microphone and its placement. I once made the mistake of using one of my condenser recording mics on a boom stand in the middle of an auditorium to capture the audio of a talk I was video recording. The mic was so good that it captured every little squeak of a chair. The overall quality was trash. I switched to a dynamic lapel mic after that and never had a problem again. The mic was insanely sensitive (I could hear every valve click, page turn, breath, and bench squeak), but its frequency range seemed limited. The sound was pretty stuffy overall as evidenced by the sound of applause at the end sounding like it was recorded during a live TV show from the 1970s. I would like to hear her play this with a profession recording setup.

How many recordings of this piece do we have to compare? IMO, if Roger Bobo or Chester Schmitz played this in their prime this would be considered a pedestrian performance.
@mpmcd814 жыл бұрын
I disagree. Both performers you mention are musicians of the highest caliber, and this performance shows she is clearly in their league. Nothing pedestrian about her performance. Each has their own peaks of excellence. Carol’s tone is a lot like Fletch to my ears and perhaps the most beautiful of the three. I’d love to have any of the three playing in the background while I do my work.

I will know that I have made it as a musician when people write unnecessarily cruel/inaccurate hot takes under my performances to make themselves feel better.
@WayneForrest13 жыл бұрын
What a ridiculous comment. Carol is at the top of any list of amazing tuba players including the ones mentioned. This performance is played from memory and using pedestrian equipment and microphone placement isn't the best but comes off as polished, soulful/lyrical, and as technically solid as it gets. I heard her at Carnegie in PSO on Mahler's 7th. Outstanding.
@garymaske2 ай бұрын
She is much more lyrical than Bobo and Bobo was fantastic and the most physical player ever. There is no universe in which this performance is pedestrian.
