GHANAIANS I NEED HELP Hi ok so I’m 15 and I’m half Ghanaian (dad) half white (mum) . But my dad left when i was really little and so I’ve grown up without embracing where I’m from. Please don’t get me wrong i love love love my mum and am so happy with my upbringing despite the lack of father, but because she is white and we live in England i am EXTREMELY whitewashed. From the way that i dress (I’m too scared to wear my natural hair down because it’ll stand out in my completely white school) to the way that i speak. And i didn’t really realise until my dad came back a year or two ago and started taking me to his family’s weddings and that. The songs they used to play, like Castro and 4x4, i remember from before my dad left and it immediately made me want to dance. But me being whitewashed i really didn’t know how to. The whole vibe of Ghanaian weddings makes me so proud to be Ghanaian. But then i get upset about the fact that I’m not Ghanaian at all. The gist of the story is i want to embrace my Ghanaian side more but i have no idea where to start. I love the traditional clothes but I live in England and there are no African shops near by. And even if their were all my friends are white and i know i would feel silly wearing it even thought i really want to. I want to make some black friends but would feel like an imposter because i don’t feel black. But i want to feel black and i want to feel Ghanaian and i want to embrace it more and more as i grow up. I think it is too late for me to learn the language now, but anything to make me feel more connected to that side of my family would help. Does anyone know what i can do or where to start?
