Thank you. 120 fps slowed down 5 times for the hits. Filming by Borislav Krustev

This was with a 35mm manual lens on APS-C (so ~50mm FF) with no stabilisation, handheld, at f2. So a bit wobbly. And the background was a bit blown out, but worth it for the good exposure on the fencers.

Damn I hope he doesn’t get kneecapped!

Don’t worry about it. He usually has full gear, just wasn’t wearing it today. Therefore we weren’t attacking legs.

@@AngelChernaevHistoricalFencingfencing hitting only the top half is fine (I do it too), but in s&b I'm not a fan since the legs are an important targets. I also feel that the risk to hit the legs after a descending cut hits the rim of the buckler is quite high.

I absolutely agree with you in general. In this case however it was quite casual. I will also play the experience card and claim I can control myself enough not to hit below the jacket in such an environment.

Not easy to defend with such a small buckler. For a real fight I'd surely bring a bigass scutum & hope the op brought a buckler

Those bucklers are about average size. Sure a bigger shield will protect better but is also harder to carry around
