Casual Collisions

4 жыл бұрын

This is an experimental amalgamation of different processes on a single shirt: extreme vertical incline, hot water irrigation, and ice dye. This was a starting point to decide where to go with new processes and I have a few planned based on the results from this test shirt.

I love hot water irrigation! It gives some really cool effects! I use a syringe with 140 degree water temp in a crockpot. And the results are awesome!

This is so different from any other piece I have seen you do, and I loved the results just as they are but even more for their potential. You have such a creative mind, I trust you will be inspired what to do next when the time comes. Inspiration is often incremental.

I'd like to see this experiment again but with the colors separated R/Y/B or r/y/b/r/y/b across the top to see how far down the colors travel and see if they all follow the same pathways. I think the lime green might have came about while adding the soda ash solution because it was added sideways along the design as well as from the top. I love this experiment and I'll have to try it myself to see what cool results can happen.

Its fantastic and really was surprising. I always say it's like Christmas morning every time I open a dye. I would want to try a scrunched twist in a similar manner to give another side to the puzzle of "where to go with it next!"

I’ve never seen this technique it is pretty cool!!! I’m thinking putting the blue over the yellow turned it all green n the red on top of the blue gave u some purple g that’s just my opinion!! But it turned out really cool I think it would be super cool just regularly dyed!!!!

I liked this pattern. Maybe next time: yellow dye, ice, soda ash mix; blue dye, ice, soda ash mix; red dye, ice, soda ash mix. Overall soda ash mix. Wash. Please video it if you do this!

If you can figure out how to work with colors to make the feathery areas look like fairy wings that would be nifty. Fantasy loving folks love their fairies. Also maybe test the direction of the arch shape to see what happens? The only thing besides the time involved seems to be the waste of soda ash.

I am really curious to see how either different amounts of say the blue or a different sequence of color layers would affect the final colors in the shirt. I know it took alot of hours, but it is a very stunning shirt. Your experiments are great, it is fun to see you play!

Yep red dissolves the least and blue dissolves the most yellow is somewhere in the middle but you put the yellow on first so it absorbed the fastest. It can be really interesting on ice dyes how the powdered dyes will split. Like if you try to make you're own purple on an ice dye it will come out with the blue soaked all the way through with a reddish purple on top. This can either be really cool or really irritating depending on what you were going for. Anyway thanks for the videos. I wouldn't know half of the things I do without them 😉✌️

This is cool!!! I would like to try two colors side by side on the folded end then flip the chimney 180° and put one color on the other side. So it would flow in two opposite directions and you might see all three colors and their combos. Also- why not try it already soaked in soda ash and ad some powder ash between ice melts? I've been using crushed ice lately- try that too, if possible!

So instead of ice, you should mix your powder dye with soda ash and then add hot water to it at 120-140 degrees. Skip the ice step. Don't pour the water in either. Go full HWI with it for the vertical design and use some sort of sprayer with the hot water, so that'll help run it down.

Is the detailed area where you used the sinew? If so, maybe on the next similar fold, use more sinew for more detail?
@TheWVbear
@TheWVbear 4 жыл бұрын
I can tell that the sinew played a big part in the color retention of the feathers, I believe without it it would have been more mono tone. I recommend that you play with sinew tightness and placement. As far as the immersion I have successfully immersed (poured over in container) boiling water with soda ash mix and got robust color and pastel (depends on color saturation, I used liquid dye) at the same time similar to your very first experiment. I let it sit for 25 min and washed out. I cant explain the look other than color splits that are robust and undertones that look wonderfully faded and have almost a powdery/puffy look to them. I hope that helps. 🙂

Maybe do the same thing but only do the ice for the yellow twice and once for each of the other two colors. Maybe throw one extra ice cube on the other two colors. Or do the yellow the same but only apply the other two colors to part of the top. Like say the red in two corners across from each other and the blue in the other corners. Leave a little of the middle space for just yellow?

I don’t know..I think you lose the really subtle ice effects by melting through a very small surface area, the individual colors don’t get a chance to interact over the larger area and just blend together, and then washing through the soda ash. I prefer the more traditional way of doing the ice dye..I still enjoyed the experiment though, without trying different stuff, you won’t expand the boundaries.
