If you are selling only tea leaves without owning a tea manufacturing or processing factory, the income from selling unprocessed tea leaves will generally be considered as agricultural income. Agricultural income is exempt from tax under Section 10(1) of the Income Tax Act, provided it comes from cultivation. Therefore, if you are simply growing and selling the tea leaves, you will not be subject to a 40% tax. However, if there are other business activities or processing involved, tax treatment could differ. Regarding MSME registration, it is not mandatory for selling tea leaves or any agricultural products. However, registering as an MSME can provide benefits like easier access to loans, subsidies, and protection under the MSME Development Act. It can be advantageous for future growth or if you plan to expand your operations.
