This project was supposed to be a big bowl made from a piece of Colorado Cottonwood. I removed several burls using a bandsaw and then thought I'd go ahead and see if I could get a good bowl out of it.
Everything went pretty smooth until the very end. I had to cook it after doing a rough shape because it was still pretty wet and that opened up a few cracks, but some filler took care of those. It was a little rotten at the bottom, but those cracks filled pretty good, too...at least on this inside.
When I flipped it over and started to remove the tenon...well, something gave. Pretty sure it was because of the rot in the center. The whole thing got thrown off and, somehow, it broke one of my flat jaws. Glad that piece of metal didn't hit me!
Anyway, it was so close to being a great bowl! Hope you enjoy the video anyway!

Wow! Never seen the jaws snap off with a flying bowl. A little black or brown ca glue and it should be fine. It will just give it more character. 😊

Yeah, new one for me, too. Still not really sure what happened.

Never tried drying in the oven, microwave a few times where you can really control time and heat. Nice piece of Manitoba maple.

Sorry to see the Box Elder bowl mishap . I always leave the base on for that reason.

FWIW, my two pen’neth. At about 12:50 you see the (filled) crack pattern across the bottom. That looks compromised to me. Then when you’re turning off the tenon you’re pushing the gouge both towards and away from the live center instead of towards the headstock. I suspect that put additional cracking pressure on it. Using that scraper to finish put too much torque on it and it broke. You might have been able to save it using a swept-back bowl gouge, a little tail stock pressure and much lower RPM to take off that final nubbin, a la Phil Anderson of Shady Acres.

I feel your pain! Ha so I am not alone! Yes I enjoyed the video. Never thought about using the pipe fittings to hold it while it dries. Thanks!

Crap! I wasn't expecting that, and I'm sure you weren't either. I have had it happen before. I was able to glue it back together and it was all good.
