Retired AF Hurricane Hunter (weather officer) here, with flights into at least 3 cat 5's and a whole lot of cat 3s and 4s in my logbook. In most eyewalls the rain is so intense you have _no_ visibility out the windshield, and at times you can hear the rain pelting the skin over the roar of four turboprops despite wearing noise-canceling headsets. It literally wears the paint off of the prop spinners and the leading edges of the external fuel tanks. Turbulence sometimes isn't as bad as you might think. But if you've ever seen a dog pick up a chew toy and shake it at ridiculous speed, there were times where the hurricane was the dog and our plane was the chew toy. We were shaking so violently that my eyeballs could not focus on the instruments until the storm decided to give the plane back to us to fly. Standard aircraft radars are weather avoidance radars, with colors ranging from green to yellow to orange to red. When the Air Force took delivery of the WC-130Js back in the early 2000s, they had to tell Lockheed they needed a weather _penetration_ radar. We've got four different shades of red, from "ok, you can go there if you have to" to "NO !$%@#^%@#! - DON'T GO ***THERE***!!!!"

Thanks for commenting this. I'm a private (hobbyist) pilot who always dreamed of hunting hurricanes and your comment made me very vividly imagine how it could be for a second. Is it always peaceful at the eye?
@warrenmadden25865 ай бұрын
@@clebsgaming92 Well, the turbulence slacks off and visibility usually improves (though not all eyes are completely clear), but the crew always has to be aware that the same rough ride that they just experienced to get into the eye must soon be faced to get _out_ of the eye. On a typical WC-130J mission, we do four passes through the eye, so that's eight times through the eyewall.

Typically NOAA's G-IV aircraft would be used the create a picture of what the upper atmosphere above/around the tropical system to forecast where the storm might go, rate of intensification, and or speed. the aircraft with the task of gathering information from inside the tropical system would usually be NOAA's WP-3D Orion aircraft that drops dropsondes into different parts of the system to gather surface data, there's also a fleet of upgraded USAF C-130's known as WC-130j's (C-130j weatherbird) stationed in Keesler AFB in Mississippi that also drop dropsondes into different parts of the hurricane to gather data on the system. Yes i know you might be thinking i'm a nerd but when i get older i am considering joining the 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron and being a "hurricane hunter" myself so that's why i know all this.
