It's partly that they have a tail for counterbalance, partly that their terminal velocity is lower (though not low enough to completely escape injury from a height like that), and partly that they're overconfident idiots that don't quite realise the danger (kinda like most humans).

Looking at fall distances as "X times their own size" is a bit of a misconception. The cat is made out of the same stuff as you are, so it certainly isn't going to be any *less* durable in a fall. Except, the cat also weighs less so its legs have to dissipate less energy. Imagine dropping a tiny stone and a massive boulder off of a building. It's pretty intuitive that the big boulder is more likely to break, right? Somehow, our intuitive perception of heights changes for living things. It's always been fascinating to me.
