The opening prologue depicting the ancient desert landscape of the title shapeshifting Cat People is a visually stunning set piece;gorgeous pre digital matte paintings by Albert Whitlock & David Bowie's sensual humming of the Cat People myth

it truly is a beauty film, some scenes are just burned into my memory due to their beauty, the use of natural lighting shadows and colors truly elevated this film into a work of art

Moroder's soundtracks for Cat People and American Gigolo are great, two great movies by Schrader. Such a visually stunning director and he picks interesting collaborators for his scores, love the Bowie vocals too! Cat People is one of my favourites as well, so much cinematic style going on in everything from the camera angles to the amazing costumes. It was one of the main influences on me to start wanting to study film and understand how some films look and feel so different. Schrader became one of my all times favs :)

@moondra3481 💛❤️ I believe Morodor also handled the _Scarface_ soundtrack. With due respect to the acting of Al Pacino et al, Oliver Stone's writing, and Brian De Palma's directing, that movie simply wouldn't have been the same without its iconic music. Both the film & its soundtrack have withstood the test of time.

Great review, I have admired this film since first seeing it on it`s cinematic release. The combination of set design, photography, editing, and soundtrack, was masterfully integrated and aligned to his own sensibility by Schrader. There is a scene where the camera passes over the Zoo Keepers bedside table, one of the books on it is John Nathan`s biography of Yukio Mishima, I thought after seeing the film that Schrader , or Nagisa Oshima, would be the perfect director to make a film of one of his literary works, little hoping for the utterly original and innovative film biography he would go on to make. "Mishima A Life In Four Chapters" and "Cat People" are my favourite Schrader films, they share so many layers and textures of creative sensibility. Schrader is for me the most truly original and regenerative member of the "Brat Pack" a criminally underrated director, as this is an unjustly neglected masterpiece. Many thanks.

Having recently watch both the 1982 film and the original 1942 version I think this was a masterful work of cinema but 'show don't tell' isn't always great advice. Some scenes are completely visceral such as the leopard attack on the zookeeper and work well. However, I think the picture was too ambitious with the special effects and could have used a lighter touch.

Omg ! And you have to see the cinematography excerpts in the the dvd . ( when they dyed the serpent ) . Amazing , . and they show the zoo it’s actually a set . And the panther it’s an animatronic figure . ( love it ) . My FAVORITE movie .

Thanks for watching. I totally understand your feelings. I only mention it once as one of the Universal remakes along with The Thing, because Tourneur’s or Lewton’s film whichever way you look at it lol Stands alone. For me the basis for comparison other than the films’ title and the swimming pool scene is very slight. The two films are both masterpieces in their own way, but in my mind very different. But in the future, I am currently writing a review of Tourneur’s work I’m a big fan of ‘I walked with a Zombie’ and especially ‘Night of the Demon’ I grew up watching Val Lewton’s movies and all the old horror stuff. Great filmmaker. I hope that explains as I’m a big fan of both movies and don’t want to insult the original lol Thanks again.
