I can't think of a better example of a Tabaxi in existing fiction than Nyanta from Log Horizon. Dude oozes style and flare while stabbing you a bunch of times with his absurd swashbuckling skills (and he's a master in the kitchen, too!). I totally agree we need Good Boys in the game too.

Adventure idea- there has been an uptake in “feline ferocity” (tabaxi/weretigers/displacer beasts etc.) on the roads recently. The party’s been tasked with taking care of it. They find an attack is going on now. The party engages and the attackers flee. They follow the group until they disappear into a worn down house on a cliff. There’s some movement inside the house. So they knock on the door. When an old woman with a cane opens the door 2 things are immediately evident 1) there’s enough cats inside to make the beastmaster ranger want to change their favored enemy to cats for no other reason than number of xp he’d get from slaying all these cats 2) it smells like the house is on a mountain of cat poop When they go inside the door slams shut and several tabaxi and 2 Rakshashas come out of the shadows. Mother blackcat dispels her mass polymorph. And you have yourself a purrfect encounter with a murderous psychotic cat lady.

I loved my Yabaxi hawk totem barbarian gladiator named Ogres Loincloth. I hammed up the wrestler deal ala King from Tekken. Totally Ric Flaired it up. He was a "Worg riding, wyvern flying, wheeling dealing, kobold baby stealing, fledgling of a fletcher. Woo!" Also tabaxi tend to have names that are also objects or things. So having the DM say "Ogres Loincloth" every intiative was worth a laugh or snicker from the table.

I literally built an entire campaign based on the work of a Tabaxi wizard who established a city, found a xorn, and used it to find 3 platinum mines, and subsequently started a high-magic city, set up teleportation circles across the land, and his wife is a freakishly tall barbarian, both of which are level 20, and they since there was no population of tabaxi on the continent, to avoid inbreeding, they trade magic education, resources, safety, etc. to get the youth from other tabaxi communities, and they have a complex bureaucracy for this, though no government, as feral kitty just has dozens of simulacrums as sentries, and all the warding spells are cast on his home, since he is like 300, because of the clone spell, as is his wife, who he makes clones for also. I did this in part because my previous DM hated cats, and though he liked my character, he disliked cats such that I never once ran into another tabaxi in my game, so I made my campaign in the same world, but with my character having made a truly massive population of tabaxi on the continent. Though, when I originally played, he was a ranger, and it was amazingly fun, and the few times I used that feline agility it was hugely useful, kept my archer safe, I continually kicked buttocks. I've since made dozens of tabaxi characters, because they are so darn versatile.

"Omg, tabixi monk is so OP cuz you move so fast." I mean, you could close the gap pretty easy, but that's not OP. "B-but, the can't be caught cuz they're moving like 300 feet" Yeah, but if your MONK, THE MELEE FOCUSED CLASS, is 300 feet away, there's not much he can do either. Even if it's not a monk (or of it's a multiclass), the only attacks you can make at that distance are maybe a handful of spells, or a bow with disadvantage. This is assuming you even have that much space, which you won't if you're in a more confined area like most dungeons.

If Wizards of the Coast makes another Magic: the Gathering related source book for D&D, I'm hoping they include Leonids. They're generally more lion-like feline humanoids. But in the mean time, I keep them as intended: obscure jungle hunters. I'm old school that way.

Cat people are my favourite! I have sub varieties and individual sub species names my overall name for cat people is: Felinis. Also house cat needs to have darkvison added, just saying. Also with all humanoids I start with "people" then think of the "other". Often my cat people are more humanish but have some cat elements. Some examples are: I have one culture of super truthful leopard people who insist on strict rules of honour and code of conduct (more are not travelers than are travelers!). Elsewhere I have a culture of very lawful noble Lionfolk who are not chaotic at all except for the outcasts, they build cities and stay more in one place with only a few being more the "travelling type" such as merchants or adventurers. And a race of fast athletic cheetah-folk who travel and are more nomadic with some permanent stone cities they go too yearly for a great athletics festival with many dex related events and foot races, they care about the honour and bragging rights of winning AS MUCH as the prizes (which are valuable), they tend to be prideful of their dexterity and speed and get embarrassed at any slip up. And a race of house cat people that functionally are basically just humans with better nightvison and slightly different diets. And endless more! Also cat people tend to be allergic to chocolate and not really like sweet foods or candies, thinking of cats diet biology: but I keep them a bit more omnivorous but prefer high meat in their diet (happiest if meat is 70%). I also make them ALWAYS tend to CARE about about money and have a bit of a struggle with greed (more like humans). The not liking money thing is utter nonsense and doesn't suit CATS AT ALL! I also tend to allow for at least a few stat variables bu type with a "house cat" having higher dex and charisma but a beefier wildcat has high str and dex, etc. Really THINK about it cats and humans are already more similar than different so my cat people are more human like. People know how to behave once adult and not steal randomly or knock things over so.... A cat person would to guys "people first" they have to get along with other people! Tabaxi are too specific to one long ago supplement, really we need three sub types at least: housecat, slender wildcat (speedy) , and muscular bulky wildcat (str).Of course I house rule a ton and use the official rules more as guidelines and suggestions correcting whatever i choose as I go! fun video thanks!

Honestly, I don't see the issues people have with Tabaxi. The skill proficiencies aren't any better than the two free picks Half Elves and Lizardfolk get. Most people will pick Stealth and Perception on those races anyway. They can climb a little bit, always have a weapon that deals the same damage as most improvised weapons, and they can run fast every other round. Seems fine, especially if half the party is variant human.

In my experience as a DM, it's not so much the race as the players that play one. I have had very bad experiences with Tabaxi in my campaigns. Most of them focus on the "Oh, I'm so chaotic, going to go off and do my own stuff, can't keep my attention on anything for longer than 5 seconds" aspect of the race. Eventually both myself and the other players are ready to frag the character. I pretty much banned them at my table without a very good backstory and discussion of how the character will be played. Discriminatory? Yup. I'm OK with it.
@CitanulsPumpkin
@CitanulsPumpkin 5 жыл бұрын
DJ, yeah that sucks, but it's a "chaotic stupid" player issue more than a mechanics issue. That's the kind of thing that should be addressed and ironed out in a session zero. Kid, Okay, but that only happens every other round and it requires a very specific multiclass or feat build. I don't know if you used the Monk movement bonus at levels 18-20 to come up with that number but assuming 18Monk/2Rogue moving 300ft. in round requires double dashing with Action & Bonus Action plus being level 20. I don't know about you but being able to move 300 feet and do nothing else at level 20 is not overpowered in my book. Especially when doing it again requires no movement the next round. At that point the player has sunk way too many resources into making it so their character can run from one patch of cover in a dragon's lair to another piece of cover 250-300 ft. away. 300 feet of movement is nothing at high levels. It should be expected. Hell, all the casters and one or two of the battlers who found a fancy magic item should be Misty Stepping all over the damn place from level 5 onward.

In case you wanted a character idea... I had a Lizardfolk character named Blue that was a nature cleric of a savage, survival of the fittest type of god, and he liked to collect fingers from his kills, so he would have snacks for later on. He believed that the weak should be subjugated, farmed, and devoured. He learned however, that sometimes strength comes in small packages. He doesn't fuck with gnomes, specifically, because the gnome sorcerer in my party could (and did, twice) match and overcome him in spell-battle.

I really like the semi-nomadic approach to the Tabaxi, especially since unlike many of the other nomadic peoples in D&D 5e, they aren't overtly savage or even evil. It fits into a lot of historical niches that I think are really helpful for fleshing out a world, and there are so many historical examples to draw on for nomads, not to mention fantasy inspirations, and the ability to draw on the actual tendencies of large cats. You could add in the suspicion and racism that has often been directed towards such people, but you certainly don't need to if that's not the type of game you run.

I would love to make a subrace of tabaxi like a lion and just call it Pride Tabaxi. Plus 2 to strength and +1 Cha and have a race ability where they are proficient with intimidation and maybe have adv on intimidation checks. That would be awesome. I can think of a chultan paladin who wants to gather up a clergy to worship the lost god of chult to bring him back from absence.

For me the most fascinating part of tabaxi is the entire idea that they are "born" with a specific personality trait or way of behaving by the cat god, i think this is RP gold to try and explore what would that mean in a society where we believe in the freedom of good and evil, and how they act to punishing those who they believe are just "born evil"

Yup. When my players choose to be power gamers, I simply rev up the strength and challenge of enemies and puzzles. Suddenly grunts are highly coordinated military units that present a challenge to drain player resources. Now grunts are battle masters, or sorcerers, etc. Or heck I've thrown low level warlock enemies who drew their power from the big baddy. Now eldritch blasts are coming your way. Some of them can. shove you back some are adding charisma.

Tabaxi wizard actually works. Climb and agility are both good for repositioning, which is important for a squishy wizard to not get squished, especially at low levels. At later levels you'll be casting fly and not benefiting from those things, but at least you'll probably SURVIVE to later levels, which is more than can be said for most wizards.

Heads up; novel comin' in hot. First time commenting on one of your vids, Web DM. I discovered you earlier this year and have since binge-watch all of your videos (don't judge me, everyone has a hobby) including the Coven Razel-Sin (good stuff, by the way). I was taught D&D around 8 years old by my parents, who were still using 1st Edition AD&D. I played that and only that for 20 years until last May when I got a group of Randos together to play 5E, thanks in part to the Angry GM and his ramblings about the system. I'd been DMing since my parents conned me into it at the age of 14 ("I get to be GOD? Of COURSE I'll do it!"); Needless to say, my 14-year-old brain was not the best at DMing, but I've gotten better. Since my discovery of Web DM I moved forward in leaps and bounds in my DMing for 5E, so thank you thank you for that! Absolutely love your content, and look forward to following you both (and the crew!) for a good while. Keep up the post show bloopers/tangent reel. I love the times you guys bring up something from a past game and Pruitt immediately sighs, hangs his head, rubs his temples, asks God for strength, and then gives Jim a good ol' "f*ck you, Jim". Some of the best moments. That, and hairball reading tabaxi diviners. Your shows are the perfect backdrop to listen to as I vomit out whatever "creative" stuff strikes my fancy on World Anvil; keep up the rambling spontaneous conceptual discussions. Keep up the quality content, and add another avid support to your ever-growing list!

Following canon tip for playing non-cartoonish "down-to-earth" tabaxi: Volo's says the hyper-curious, obsessive, silly tabaxi are the ones sent abroad to gather information. However, there's a whole continent of them that do not travel abroad... which indicates that this is not normal for the species. So... just play one of the regular ones, not one of the oddly hyper-curious ones, and find a different reason why they'd be out in the world.

It is funny that your first thought is trying to mitigate the house cat tropes, since personally maybe I grew up watching too much ThunderCats, but my first thought and tropes for a cat person always stems out of big cats... I'm much more likely to build a tabaxi barbarian or fighter than to initially think about a sneaking Rogue... actually, the first time I really incorporated tabaxi into a Homebrew world, I pretty much pulled the aesthetic straight out of the Gerudo in Legends of Zelda, particularly Ocarina of Time. Always thought the concept of the one male born every hundred years fit in with kind of a concept of a Lion's Pride. A society based around they're only really being one mail at a time who was the de-facto ruler of the group, and then adventurers could have seeds like being a male who was born too early in the previous males Lifetime and so had to flee The Pride before he was killed, or a female tabaxi who wanted to see what life outside of the rigid Pride tribe was like... I mean, obviously that's very specific example, but it's just one of the many ways in which my brain goes to how big cats act in nature more than domesticated house cats when I start trying to incorporate tabaxi into my worlds....
