Cat Power - Rockets

This song is probably the best example of Chan's early sound, coming out of the new york noise scene with bands like Sonic Youth she had a similar gritty style in her instrumentals, (Steve Shelley did drums on her first two albums) but with a vocal style that's all her own. This song is so good it actually appears on both her first two albums, which were recorded on the same day.

Beautiful song! I saw Cat Power live in Oslo over 20 years ago just before the release of the covers record. Me an my friends were shouting to Chan to play Rockets. She said she had forgotten the lyrics and then my friends pushed me on stage to sing. We ended up doing a duett together. She played guitar and I did the singing. Such an amasing moment! I remember she gave us a big glass of her water, but it was not water, just Vodka:)

Used to get blitzed out of my mind on triple C's while on deployment, sulk, and play fallout 3 listening to this song on repeat until I fell asleep in a deep depression. This song really conjures up a lot of demons for me, but compresses them in a way that makes me almost proud of it... also made me call my mom a lot over there.

This song has stained my soul with the memories of my ex. Lust and misery overwhelmed our hearts over time leaving us thirsting for more from each other though I think deep down we both knew it would never turn into more than what it was nor was it ever meant to be. This trumps mainstream music out there. In this day an age (where every goddamn progression known to man has been redone and corporately played a billion times) there should be more raw/honest artists, like cat power, who make music not giving a fuck, who tackle musical composition with a minimalist approach, so they can focus on evoking feeling through atmospheric aesthetics and texture, rather than catchy chords and mixing. Even neo- indie bands are sellouts now... but not Chan! :)
