Cat's 420 vs. 420 XE Backhoes - What's the Difference Between These New Machines?

Some nice improvements. Especially the seat mounted controls. Have been using them on the JCB backhoes for the last 10 years and they work great.

I love the controls on the seat and the air bag control near the armrest I’ve been operating back hoe for 30 years and can’t believe it’s taken so long to switch positions and have full control, nice! there is one thing about the cat excavator curve to the boom, it moves the fulcrum to a place where it makes the machine travel backwards when removing asphalt or close surface work, I don’t know if it was a marketing thing but it’s pretty unnecessary in the real world even for loading trucks

The excavator boom is all emotion marketing. The excavator style boom is worse when lifting below grade and makes the machine heavy in the rear, which is really noticeable during roading. They would be wise to find a different boom design, but it's probably not so important as backhoes are not the performance workhorses they used to be. The bigger boom cylinder does not give more power, it just gives more boom lift capacity - so you might notice a slightly slower boom raise time compared to the F2. It's all tradeoffs.

Deere needs to take a lesson from Cat as far as the overhead storing rear window goes. Deere windows only go down and you can't stretch your feet out. Cats you can stretch your feet much more. Much more visibility and comfort.

Just got a new 420XE. I’ve been trying to figure out all the bells and whistles. It seems to be a lot more efficient but there’s a lot of electronics that can screw up.

Simply let go of the trigger and you can switch quickly. But not at the exact same time.

Cat upgraded to a 3 cylinder engine from a 4 cylinder engine. It will probably be a higher stressed engine that won't last as long. Maybe they should user thinner steel in the boom too. Management keeps having engineers downgrade the basic machine.

Its still a 4cyl engine - but with 3.6L displacement
