Cat Surrendered to Humane Society for Being ‘Too Affectionate’

An adorable 4-year-old cat, named Jerry, was surrendered to a Humane Society in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, for being too affectionate. So the team turned to social media, and Jerry finally found a new forever home. Not only did Jerry get adopted, his new owner did another good deed to help other cats at the shelter get adopted. “There's lots of Jerry's all over the country waiting for a chance,” Cherie Wachter told Inside Edition Digital’s Andrea Swindall.

My son and I had a cocker spaniel mix and she had the perfect personality. She was bossy and friendly, playful and a lot of fun. Sadly she passed away in 2019 at 13 years old.

Me too, she is still a kitten. I have 3 kitten's of a litter and one of them is extremely affectionate. She sits outside my door and cry until I open it. Which door? Bedroom, bathroom... you name it. I've only had her for 8 months, since birth and she's helped me through a lot of difficult times. They all have helped. I really needed the love they gave me, because people always let me down.

considering his old owner just wasn't meshing well with him in terms of his affection meaning she was likely trying to avoid his affection all the time...i think he'll be just fine in a new home with an owner who will be able to provide all that affection back to him. truly he'll probably get over it quick once he realizes, YAY! my new owner/s give me even more attention and love! even better!

Krakowianka I know what you mean and want to let you know that many cats don't like their owner/s or the house, or whatever, so they pack their kit bags and move to a neighbour's home, if they're welcome! I've found that they can even move in with someone up the road, which has happened to me and other people where I live, then the owner is the one who feels abandoned. 😸

Mine as well. She's an aloof street cat that's outside our office, but her adopted mother is a pretty affectionate street cat that I feed most of the time. After the mother got run over by a car, the cat got into the habit of following me to and from work. It was only a minute walk, but she never fails to be there when I get out of my house and office. After a week or so, I just adopted her.

Yup mine too. He was always a bit of a loner and kept to himself unless he wanted the attention but after his brother died it was very obvious that he needed someone else. I’m lucky I work from home. He’s constantly by my side, even as I type this he’s right next to me. It breaks my heart knowing why he wants the affection but I’m more than happy to give him all of mine ❤

My oldest cat, who is 14 this year, was such a a hyper kitten and had a bad habit of using me as a chew toy. Instead of giving her away I read up on kitten issues and how to solve them, Jackson Galaxy was a huge help. I found outy cat needed a sibling so I adopted another cat and suddenly I wasn't the prey anymore because she had another cat to play with. She's now a calm, laid back, grumpy old lady who gets annoyed at her younger brother when he wants to play.

We recently lost an affectionate cat to cancer, and the only thing that helped the pain of losing her was knowing that I had let her climb on my lap for a cuddle whenever she wanted, which was all the time! sometimes it can be too much for some people, I love my dog but she can be too affectionate and clingy and I like my space, so when I want my "me" time, I just put her in the living room and yes, my dog sleeps with me as well and I give her lots of love and treats, don't bash this woman because she could have just easily dropped it off in the middle of nowhere, she did the right thing, not everyone is clingy

Sometimes you just have to take the dive. I kept waiting for the right moment, then the right moment showed up when I rescued a cat that had been thrown out to die by her previous owner. I went to visit her at the rescue and she seemed so miserable, I couldn’t leave her there. If I’d waited until I was in the perfect situation, I’d still be waiting. That being said, I hope your situation improves so you feel more secure in adopting. 😻

I have an extremely affectionate cat: there is not a moment in the day where she doesn't follow me around, or throw herself on top of me. If I close a door she cries, and when I'm asleep she cries because she thinks I'm gone. Her previous owners raised her to adulthood then just dumped her on the street, and it was something I could never understand. Who would abandon a baby filled with such bottomless affection? I've had both dogs and cats, but I never knew how much an animal could love till her. I'm so glad Jerry found someone who could return his love, just like how my girl found me!

My first cat was aloof and didn't come to us for pets though he would tolerate it. I think it's because he was semi feral, my aunt had gotten it as a kitten and let him go outside, he would come in to eat and sleep though not all the time and she rarely interacted with him. That's probably the type of cat this person was angling for.

Had a cat that just wanted to be next to me 24/7, he was old af and on April 6 2010 he went into renal failure and I had to make one of the toughest decisions ever. Miss that little guy everyday.

I had a rescued cockatiel that was given to me 25 yrs and 2 months ago and he was such a loving bird. There was a small magnitude earthquake woke me up (4.2) and I went to check on the birds (I have two parakeets too) and my cockatiel "baby" had passed January 25th. I am still devastated and I miss him very much but I am up in age and I find it hard to take care of any more pets when I still can barely take care of my old body. I love animals more than people too. I am so glad that Jerry adopted to a good home. By the way my cockatiel was so smart and very affectionate too.

Wow. Un-freaking-believable. So glad he got a new home. But I gotta say, I can imagine if the previous owner regretted what she did, and wanted him back, only to find out he was already adopted. I would be laughing if that person actually tried anything to get him back.

The previous owner didn't do anything wrong though. See this is the problem I'm seeing everybody says if you realize you can't take care of the animal give it back to an Animal Care Center. But when the person actually does it and doesn't drop them off in the middle of the road they get judge for it. The previous owner did the mature and right thing. This is why so many people drop their animals off in the middle of nowhere because of people who don't see the full picture and immediately start judging.

I am proud of the owner for surrendering the cat if they don't have the time or energy for a very afectionate animal. It is better that the cat is in a home where they feel totally welcomed and loved.
