Cats are not typically prey for eagles. They can’t carry that weight. A rabbit is a lot lighter. I let my cats outside and we have lots of eagles around us. It’s when I see a Great a horned owl that I panick. Only saw one once beside my back door. Took the dogs for a walk around the property and it flew off. Cats are smart. They generally stick to the trees to go anywhere. They do follow me in the field or down the road but there’s always several big dogs around to protect them, but there has never been a need to.

When I lived in Alaska in the Air Force, I cautioned our new neighbor (a Captain and his wife who had recently arrived from the lower 48, and had a family cat) about the many Bald and Golden Eagles in the area. To which the Captain's wife said "Well, we try not to let our cat out too much because she has a habit of catching and killing birds" She had no clue who was facing the danger there, or how big and dangerous Eagles are to cats and small dogs. But the Eagle in this vid was just being nosy, looking for an easy meal, like table scraps or garbage thrown out the door. Instinctively, animals look at each other as predator and prey. This is one of those instances where neither knows if they can take on the other, so it always turns into a stare down with each of them running from each other.

i had a big tough siamese, blue point. a visitor brought a constrictor snake over at least 5 feet and the cat started stalking it. cat seized and taken to bedroom where the sealpoint siamese had fled. for months after a belt or necktie or even making a snakelike motion with an arm sent the sealpoint fleeing. odd as to my knowledge he had never seen a snake. that cat seemed pretty foolish with the eagle.

An airborne eagle or hawk divebombs at incredible speed. But a raptor walking around on the ground is at an extreme disadvantage at catching prey. They aren't built for that. A cat is built to be extraordinary fast on the ground. The cat was too small to fight the eagle, but that eagle had slightly less than 0% to catch that cat. And the eagle is lucky no large dog was there. Or the eagle would have become eagle dessert with a single bite. When an eagle stands or sits on the ground to stare at potential prey, it is in a position and environment where its own life is endangered. They cannot take off nearly as quickly as they can land. And they are not as formidable fighters when they don't first hammer the opponent from above with a massive power strike with those great claws that can be embedded. Eagles and hawks are ambush predators. Ambush predators risk their own lives when they get out of their preferred environment to roll the dice on land.
