This explains why earthquakes are so deadly in Mexico. If those outside walls move at all the whole heavy roof will come down on your head. Building on filled in lake beds certainly doesn't help. Still, it is incredible workmanship. Maybe the cement covering helps to keep it together.

earthquakes are deadly everywhere. Once closed, the arc, and vaults are structures stronger engineering there, watch this video where substantial evidence on these vaults are made, follow the following link, where they do the test with hollow materials and facts with plaster, in Mexico, we use solid and concrete, brick Czech video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rHnVep6hadyib9U

I watched the video, but I did not see any earthquake testing. All arches and vaults require the supporting walls to meet certain requirements. If the supports move, even small amounts, the integrity of the arch comes into question and when arches fail, they fail catastropically (suddenly, completely, and with no warning) It is much better to have light weight materials fall on you than solid, heavy materials such as a pile of bricks. The ground needs to be very solid (filled in lakes, such as Mexico City, Lake Texcoco, is built on, are not good candidates). If you do a little research on earthquakes, you will see that the rapid side to side movement of the ground often liquifies the ground under supports causing them to sink which is responsible for many sudden collapses. With ferro-cement concrete arches the steel keeps the arch together a little better so that the sudden collapse caused by 1 brick failing doesn't happen so quickly. "earthquakes are deadly everywhere" True, but history has shown that the deadliest areas are those in which heavy structures collapse on people. "Once closed, the arc, and vaults are structures stronger engineering" Stronger than what? A little sideways movement of the ground can cause a block/brick built arch to suddenly become "un-closed" Also, if the supports can't handle the side thrust put on them by the arches when they become fully loaded, as well as the gravity load, then the structure will collapse. The outside walls should be built heavier/thicker or buttressed, than the inside connecting walls on multiple arched/domed structures to handle the side/lateral load of the arches. The inner walls have one arch pushing sideways against another arch, so the inner walls mostly only have to deal with the load imposed by gravity. What I am seeing here is great workmanship, but it is not an engineered solution and I hope that it is not in a heavy earthquake zone. With that said, you build with what you have and do as good a job as you can.

kidharris in Mexico City there was an earthquake of 8.1 on the Richter scale in 1985 and many modern buildings fell dawn. but many of the oldest buildings (15th century built with this technique) were undamaged or slightly damaged. the metropolitan cathedral is sinking down (because of the ground in which was once a lake and yet still standing ...?
@kidharris
@kidharris 7 жыл бұрын
+Coleman, In reading the wikipedia article on the metropolitan cathedral it says that the church was built on top of pre-existing Aztec temples, not directly on the filled in lake. It also states that it took 42 years just to prepare the foundation for such a heavy structure and "Dropping water tables accelerated sinking caused the structure to be added to the World Monuments Fund list of the 100 Most Endangered Sites. Reconstruction work beginning in the 1990s stabilized the cathedral and it was removed from the endangered list in 2000." It also goes on to list the numerous other times that renovations have been done to save the structure. In addition a large part of the structure is dedicated to providing mass to prevent the lateral thrusts generated by the arches/domes/vaults from destroying the building. In contrast all I see here in these more modern structures to do the same job is some relatively small ferro cement walls and footings. Enough discussion. If you want to build a heavy vault on a lakebed in a earthquake zone and sleep under it, go right ahead. I'm certainly not going to stop you. I also read read the en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1985_Mexico_City_earthquake article which gives a description of the damage and it does not confirm your claim " many modern buildings fell dawn. but many of the oldest buildings (15th century built with this technique) were undamaged or slightly damaged." In fact it says that the oldest part of the historic downtown has the worst damage to buildings. Go figure..........

I'd love to have one built for me up here in New Orleans but the R value must be atrocious not to mention our rainstorms. The sun beating down on that brick all day without any insulation....oh God there would be no way of getting around that. Also I don't buy the waterproof claims. I did FEMA inspections in Puert Rico in the early 90's and their cement roofs all leaked after a while. If it's concrete or masonry cement it'll eventually develop small cracks where water seeps in. They called "infiltracion" (infiltration in English).
@ramjet7470
@ramjet7470 8 жыл бұрын
There are many products that could be applied on these type roofs if water leakage was expected to be a problem. In a dry arid environment as pictured in this video I doubt leakage is a great concern for years after completion. If the ground don't shake and the walls don't spread these roofs will remain long after tin, steel and asphalt shingled roofs are long gone.
