Dave Williams, editor, replying here. You have a point, for sure. When we walk into a dealership we're walking a fine line. The bikes are not demo bikes. Checking the settings "feels" like something a prospective customer might do. Changing them (especially shock preload) and then doing a bunch of bounce testing bleeds into demo territory. We push the envelope just checking the settings at all. But I agree with you, and we'll look at trying to do more in the future. We have a 2 Clicks Out episode coming soon with a 2017 Ducati SuperSport demo bike where we do what you suggest.

You should push the envelope even more and reveal all compromises manufacturers are making while trying to create "the perfect chassis" for every rider. Same goes for the 765 Triumph video. You show the stock settings and what's wrong with them. Wouldn't it be nice to show how easily it could be almost perfect with just a few turns on damper adjusters...

Agreed Miika. If dealerships would let me do this, I wouldn't hesitate to do so. Given the 2 Clicks Out track tuning videos, we "catch" these bikes on the other side to share the dial in settings that way per owner. I can ask dealerships if we can do this and in some cases I am sure we will be able to, but in others there may well be a wall in place so we can ask for permission to find the right settings and then put them back to showroom.

I just purchased a 2020 z900 and its possibly the best bike I've ever owned. It does everything pretty much just right. I have owned and put on the track everything from 650 Triumph twins to contemporary liter bikes. This bike gets it just right. That sweet spot where it wheelies, off throttle alone, yet somehow gracefully never too high. You'll think your schwantz. Handles like a charm, brakes as its should, and tbh just a darn easy bike to ride. Love the thing. At $9,000 out the door when compared to other bikes in the 1000cc'ish realm its a bit of a bargain. All I can say its this, if your wrestling with the idea of a naked for the comfort... Buy it. If your on something with a bit more HP and worried about "power".. Buy it. Its makes the same torque fellers, you'll be equal happy. And if your wrestling with the idea of just not sucking anymore and being more awesome at shit... Buy it. Lol things super fun, easy af to ride, and just going to make you a better rider. Buy one and I promise you'll live it AND suck less !

I totally agree. These guys put $1500 into the suspension , then sell it. I have a black and blue '22 Z and love it. Most guys aren't good enough t take advantage of all the upgrades. These bikes are excellent in every way, except 2 up.

Hey Dave i had the privledge of meeting you here in New Zealand a couple years back at a trackday you setup my gsxr750 for me perfectly. Question im 117kg (257 lb's) and i really like these z900's but im wanting to know will i nees to spend a fortune on suspention to get this thing to handle ? Will it handle my weight ? You didnt have really much good to say about the front end ......... I just like my bikes to be setup with good suspention and i really like the look of this bike but im abit put off etc, please shed some light on it for me

I'll also add the front rebound adjuster basically does nothing haha. You can put it all the way in and there's still way too much rebound. The rear shock's rebound actually makes some difference and you can play with it a little bit.

Set rider plus static sag = total sag at 33% of the total travel eg: 40-45mm of 120mm travel. Set compression at 50% of the total range eg: 22=11, then set rebound at recommended settings to start. Assess fork and shock travel used to amend preload as needed.

I have not created a video on that motorcycle. Assess travel used for the forks and shock to see how much travel is used. Fork ideal is 15-20mm from the base of the chrome tube and shock 3-4mm from the rubber bumper. There are videos for you to watch on these topics.

This a far more substantive review of the suspension than anything from the typical motorcycle magazines. Also, what do you know about the new MT-09 suspension vs the Z900? I'm kind of torn between the two bikes. The old FZ-09 suspension was supposedly horrible for technical riding and I was hoping that this would be more oriented to technical riding with its more sporty rider position. But your demonstration now has me doubting that; and now with the improved MT-09 suspension which also has compression damping, I'm now very lost. And due to my location, I definitely wouldn't be able to find any technical roads during a small test ride, nore would I want to push a bike, that I don't own, like that. So, if you could help me out with understanding the differences between the two bike's suspension capabilities, I would be very appreciative.

How those forks works? Are they worse than the usual forks when you have both legs adjustable? I'm wondering when all the adjusters are in one fork and the other one is non-adjustable how it works...

Think of it as a balancing act. Compression in one leg and rebound in the other, or spring in one leg and damping in the other. The most important part IMHO is that oil level in both legs be the same volume.

First, measure sag as it is now. Next, mark fork bottom out for maximum travel. Then assess fork and shock travel used with cable tie and grease on the shock shaft. If you are at maximum travel go ahead and add preload to the fork and/or shock until you get travel to 15-20mm from the bottom of the fork and 2-3mm from the rubber bumper on the shock. Set rebound at maximum and count back 2-5 clicks and test when the suspension oil is hot. It is a process -- there is no one setting, just what YOU need for your bike.

I an 5' 9". You can make this work by moving the bars forward slightly and resetting the lever angles and reach. Make sure you change the shifter angle.

Dave Great Video. I own Z900 and I can underline all points you found. The handlebars are great but not perfect. I‘m 90kg with gears and I changed the preload of the spring. 1cm at rear. Front 2 turns, same for the damper. It drives much better in the corners but I’m testing a little bit more, may you have more hints?

Thanks for the kind words and getting to work with your bike to make it your own. Thicker fork oil for sure, 15w given your weight. Assess fork travel used by marking bottom out and be diligent about grip levels and duration when cornering. As rebound gets worse, you hold on longer and tighter.

Dave Moss Tuning I’m thinking about change the fork spring to some Hyperpro spring too. How do you think about? I will install a zip tie at the front and measure everything. Rear the same. But it’s a mess that Kawasaki didn’t supply a wrench for the rear spring load! From engineering perspective it’s not a nice design to have a spring in standard condition nearly with no pre load and a manual which states this as standard condition - for which driver? 50kg? Much more it can’t be cause the lighter driver can relax the spring more. I’m unsure if this suspension setup is really what Kawasaki developed... Anyways the Z900 drives in stock condition very very nice and easy! I tested a lot of bikes before and no other was like the Z900.

You can change and stay with a porgressive design spring. Check how they make the springs progressive as per conical and/or spring coils narrowing/touching each other.

You can use the new oil in the right and left leg. As am example with a Ducati Scrambler I ran 15w in the plain leg and 5w in the rebound leg so help both work similarly. The same would be true of the Z900 with 15w in the rebound leg and see what you are given via the manual for fork oil viscosity in the other leg.

I concede I still don't quite get it. Anyway, according to the dealership, the bike comes from the factory with KYB KHL15-10 fork oil. Since that is very light, I have hope that replacing it with thicker oil will slow down the compression. I'm thinking Silkolene PRO RSF 7.5wt or Motul Factory Line medium weight.

Update: I had a shop replace the water-thin factory oil with Motul Factory Line medium/10wt in both fork legs. When I rode the bike, the travel in the forks was very small--no more than half way, no matter what adjustment I made to the preload. So the shop removed 50cc of oil. Now it's perfect, with travel 2/3 down without an abrupt dive all at once (as with the factory oil). Rebound damping is decreased from the factory setting by, wouldn't ya know . . . two clicks out. :)

You can increase preload front and rear then set rebound correctly. Measure fork and shock travel used and add more preload if you reach maximum travel. When you are maximum preload ad you use all travel, then it is time for springs.

You can change springs, change oil and change geometry at a minimum. Therefore I am making a recommendation for you to consider what you can budget to make the improvements needed so the bike handles well for you. The suspension should always work in the middle 3rd of the stroke. The next piece of the puzzle is where and how you ride. If you ride "slow" and do not tax the suspension heavily, then the bike might meet your needs for plushness. The bottom line is realizing that suspension needs attenetion prior to purchase so you can budget accordingly.

Hi Dave, I'm 5'3" 149 lbs with a 25" inseam, and considering buying a Z900. I currently ride a 2011 GSX-R 750 That's been lowered 3" in the rear and 1" in the front. My bike seems to fit me well. But I want something more upright for longer trips. Do you think the Z900 would be a good option for me ? Or should I look at something else like a FZ09, GSX-S 1000, or CB1000R ? Thanks

The Z900 will suit you much better as the suspension is softer so given your weight this would be all around a better purchase. I'm not sure what you used to lower your 750, but I recommend Soupy Performance lowering links as they are turnbuckles verses drilled holes so you can lower as you want.

Dave Moss Tuning Thanks for the quick reply Dave, I had my bike lowered at the local Suzuki dealer when I first bought it. They used a PSR link that looks kinda like a tie rod so the adjustment range is infinite within it's length. I specifically asked them for this style incase I wanted to change it later. Looking back now, I probably could have lowered it less than I did. But I was a fairly new rider at the time, and had dropped it once at a stop sign on an angle. I've also considered looking at an older Honda VFR 750/800, Kawasaki Ninja 1000, and the BMW touring bikes, like a K1200GT or 1150RT. I like the power of my GSX-R. Which of these do you think might be the best fit for me ? Still the Z900? Or maybe one of these ? I usually ride by myself, but sometimes my 13 year old son rides with me. He's only 80 lbs. I will need to check where my Z900 is on the spectrum and adjust accordingly. Not going to lie, I'm a bit apprehensive to tweek the suspension. I'm a heavier rider (260) so I am also concerned how my weight may impact what I see when I test, and if the factory settings are good enough, as I dont race on a track, or push my motorcycle hard. I am currently following the manufactures break in schedule, so you can imagine how I ride. I have less than 100 miles on this bike.

Dave Williams, editor, replying here. It's not just Kawi's. I've been filming suspension with Dave Moss for over 12 years. While manufacturers must choose a body type and weight of rider to aim the suspension setup at, it is astonishing how many bikes are utter suspension disasters off the showroom floor. And all manufacturers have been guilty. Who at Kawi engineered that fork valving with that weight oil such that it pogo's stoned cold on the showroom? Heat the fork oil up a bit with a brisk ride on a hot day and the thing will become a rodeo ride. Yet the average rider doesn't know any better. How would they? When was the last time you read a bike review that even mentioned the suspension, much less spoke coherently about how and why to adjust it? 99% of all handling issues described in magazine and blog bike tests are caused by bad suspension like this Kawi, or good suspension but set for somebody of a drastically different body weight. In a comparo between the Z900 and the FZ(MT)-09, the FZ might come out on top simply because it's not pogoing down the road as you ride. Very simple Andrea - what fits you the best? That's the bike for you as every time you sit on it you feel comfortable. If both are not quite perfect create a hit list of what needs changing, and then the smallest list wins :) Both are excellent motorcycles

I've owned one of those bikes and really enjoyed using it to commute on. That category is full of great bikes so check out the other reviews I have posted. If you have a bad back you'll need something on the softer side, so an SV650 might be a better overall start. Sit on them all and see what feels comfortable.

OMG this is the only review that mentions that weird handle bar and you did it without riding it. To me it was obvious but nobody else seems to notice it. It's the only thing on the bike i didn't like, it's fine but very strange and hurt my wrists after 20mins. I'm sure you could live with it and get used to it but a fairly cheap mod for an otherwise awesome bike that's priced very well.

I own a 2016 Z1000. I think what happened was a bunch of people complained about how stiff the Showa SFF forks so Kawasaki decided to go for a cheaper and soft front. That probably saved them $2000. Personally I love the Showa SFF. It was easy to adjust comp, reb and preload with an allan wrench or flat head. The rear shock is good but with only preload and rebound. No compression. I'm 180lbs fully geared. The Z1000 is a great bike. The Z900 doesn't impress me at all. I'd rather buy the new Yamaha FZ09.

Nice video Dave, really nice information there, but I don't get why such a performance bike comes with such a soft setting for the front ..also it doesn't seem that you can play a lot with the settings of the suspension , so basically like you said, you need to invest some money for the bike to handle as it should ..a bit too much like the MT-09 :D

With any bike we get what we get at a given price point. Some bikes offer interesting "items" for the price you pay whereas others give you a bargain basement approach for $2,000 less. I look at a bike and see what I have to invest to get what I need so for example, I would by the middle R1 with the lighter wheels etc as in a retail situation, I'm saving quite a bit of money. The hard part for any buyer is perspective, so cost of ownership is (for me) a primary factor.

I actually owned this machine the other year. Suspension on Japan's modern "UJM" bikes is trash. Why do they make such a stupid mess of it? They could do better even with the basic stuff they put on these. Messed up spring rates, messed up oil, messed up damping settings. It's ridiculous. The only real answer for the Z900 or MT-09 is fling the stock fork internals and stock shock into a deep canyon, buy fully adjustable cartridges and a 3 or 4-way shock and proper springs. Set the thing up for one's weight. And that's only the start. Rip off the nasty rubber hoses and nasty stock brake pads and replace them with something that works. When you've gone through that trouble, replace the stock plastic tires with something that actually grips in all conditions. I understand the need to hit a price point. I don't understand why they mess up the springs and damping so badly with the hardware that they do supply.

Excellent bikes, lots of tangible value for the price, but always without exception a mess in suspension and cheap rubber hose brake lines. On another note, the forks and brakes on the Z900 are borrowed from the former Z800 which the Z900RS gets radial mount brakes and better suspension. No idea why, as the RS is a less sporty model intended to be used in more street and urban settings, with less power, less lean angle, and less aggressive appearance.

I have tuned several of these at the track and the fork oil was replaced the night before the track day every time. The rear shock cannot go above 3 clicks above the lowest setting as spring tension over powers rebound. This is for 140-160lb rider in C group.
