Did you know you could cut off Kalameet's tail by shooting him in the face? This is during a ground battle. If timed properly, using Crystal Soul Spear to shoot him in the face will pierce through and cut his tail off. I discovered this by complete accident but was able to replicate it several times.

@@thecasul1524 I was never able to nail down the exact moment. And it was so long ago (Prepare to Die Edition). But it wasn't ever during an ability. He was chasing me as I back pedalled. The real problem is, when you have the intelligence capable of doing this, you aren't on a build that would be able to make use of the weapon you get. That's the main reason I never had the motivation to figure out the specifics of the shot. It was always a nice surprise when it happened, but nothing I could capitalize on.

@marhawkman303
@marhawkman303 3 жыл бұрын
well I suspect that most people who tried failed, and no one wrote a guide on how to make it work. Speedrunners tend to be people who rely on guides a lot. The example here points out that the extreme range needed makes it difficult because as a magic user you have to stand in specific places to hit him at all.

speedrunners are really dedicated and persistent, which is a strength required to become consistent but a weakness in this case as they dedicated too much to the current route and optimizing that and thus stopped experimentation.

@@NuclearRaven13 To be fair to them, the only reason this is run-viable is because there are blindspots in the arena that prevent you from instantly dying whenever Kalameet attacks. Its because most speedrunners arent actually good at they game they run. They just practice the same thing again and again and almost never experiment. While they can beat the game faster than most players a casual player can beat them in another aspect. Its the main reason I say speedrunners arent real gamers. They play a game once and the speedrun it. Most don't even bother trying new things really. Take squilla for example. One of the best speedrunners but if you ever watch him playing casually hes one of the worst players. Can't watch him he's so shit. Makes so many stupid choices that could be figured out with basic common deduction skills.

I’m not that familiar with the Dark Souls speedrun routes but I want to say this in case this can be of use to someone: When I was replaying dark souls last month, I was venturing through New Londo Ruins when I got to the building with those dozens of ghosts that can pass through walls. While I was rushing through a tight corridor one of the ghosts grab attacked me and the tight space made my character clip inside the wall during the grabbing animation. When the animation was done my character fell off the map and at this point I was already swearing at my tv when I realized my character didn’t die and was in fact standing up INSIDE the Four Kings arena. I didn’t have the ring equipped so I just died and the message “you were taken by the abyss showed up” but the first thing I thought after that was that this could definetly be used as a speedrun strat.

It can't since the boss fights are triggered by the fog gates. There's a static model (that you can't hit or see) for the 4 kings to which they share the health bar with, that's probably what you saw.

@a-1455 3 жыл бұрын
@@kiister8126 you didn't see them because they kind of spawn, they're not really there untill the fight starts. Defeating Kalameet without Gough's help is one of the most rewarding things the DLC provided. You could go off the beaten path and take down a dragon just like in the opening cinematic of the game, even if the first methods took ages. Also, I'm impressed at how well-designed the game is for such a variety of methods to be possible for beating Kalameet this way, from Kalameet's different attacks and positions in the air to Strong Magic Shield and quick ring swapping proving incredibly valuable. I don't understand why thousands of other people didn't try what Skaidan did? Surely "using magic" with a particular shield isn't that outside the box of an idea?

I already did that exact thing even before DS2 had come out. Didn't really think it was that big of a deal at the time. Back than i was just trying many different ways of killing Kalameet without Goughs help, and that was basically it. And i believe that there are MANY other players who have done that as well but just didn't care to tell anybody about it because it just seems so obvious thing to do. I for one have just never cared about speedrunners in general and like to find different strategies in games just for my own amusement alone and never really care to tell anyone else about what i have done. Part of it is also because i always assume that someone else has already done just that and it's already a common knowledge so why should i go and tell everyone about it.

As someone who constantly played ds1 as Smurf characters for online, it was nice to see someone else use strong magic shield. It was occasionally useful when you wanted to keep your stats low and use trash shields and I came to find it pretty baller.

This is a really neat overview, thanks a lot :) Goes to show, that even larger popularity games like DS have these "... Well, that's somewhat obvious in hindsight"-moments. I feel like there would be a lot more discoveries useful to speedrunning in general, if people wouldn't be inclined to think "I guess it's probably not useful", and simply ask/present their case to the runners anyways, like Skaidan did :)

I've seen a lot of people who have the take of "if that worked someone would have done it already" often people who read guides... and misinterpreted the guide as being more comprehensive than it really was. This made them think it was the ONLY way, when in reality it was the only way the person writing the guide knew how to make work.

So the "obvious strategy" is the lifebar animation buffer? Cause I recall the running to the bushes strat back when it released. Or did that get forgotten as it was useless for speedruns as it was an reremembered as the metagame shifted?

Wait..... This was actually revolutionary?!? Been using this strategy myself way back when ds2 hadn't even come out yet, and I'm not even a speedrunner LMAO. Just thought that maybe there was a good way of killing him while he was still flying and started trying many different ways of doing just that. At first I was doing it with arrows, but I finally figured that magic was the way to go and found that that exact place to be the best place to shoot the magic arrows at.

I love how much of a shitshow Dark Souls Remaster was. Everyone got super excited for the teaser trailer! Wow! Dark Souls 1 with modern-day graphics and better combat?! We might even get some of the cut content restored! Then it's revealed it's just the lamest type of remastering. Where they just up the frame cap and fiddle around with some random stuff. So right here everyone was disappointed. Especially people on PC who didn't need this. Even Xbox players didn't struggle too much since Xbox One was backwards compatible and allowed for a more stable 30fps. But to make matters worse. They decide to delist the sale of the original Dark Souls on steam. Wouldn't be such a big deal right? Well, that is if you ignore the fact that mod support was completely ruined. Making important and popular mods not work for the new version! Then there is other stuff. Some gameplay changes did nothing but seem to harm the player experience more. I believe there is a speedrunning issue also? I think something about the in-game timer? There's also the fact that 60fps for a game never meant to have 60fps isn't always a great idea. I feel there are more issues I can't remember right now. But man, I just want to see a video going into detail of why the Remaster was so hated by a lot of the community. Obviously, the game is still Dark Souls. But there was just a lot of issues with it. Better yet though. I'd love to see a video of the speedruns of Dark Souls 2 and Dark Souls Scholar of the First Sin edition. That changed a lot.
