It's reassuring to know that games for the very best look exactly like my pleb games. Other players rob you a couple times instead of the clear leader, pull a VP as your first dev card with low production, 7 out randomly, and your statistically common dice roll that you based your entire set up off of doesn't roll for 25 turns. This game was unwinnable from the 15:00 minute mark.

I really like 9 3 4 over 9 6 4. Then you build to the 8 sheep, and you get the same thing you would have started with, plus that semi-rare brick. Not like anyone is taking the 8 3 sheep, so you're guaranteed that 3:1 port. That lets you point the 9 12 6 road down, and possibly get the wood port, which is pretty great since you're 100% citying the 9 12 6, so any 6 roll is a free card.

I would call it a tie between the two of you. As I mentioned earlier, I discovered Drew through his collaboration video with Mark. Mark (hubbsywubbs) often gets too distracted by his streaming chat and/or Colonist dialogue box. It can be painful to watch when he times out or miss-clicks. However, his energy and personality are major contributions to our hobby. He's also a great player who provides teaching/advice. OTOH, Drew has only been posting on YT for a few weeks, and it's obvious why his channel is growing. Drew, you strike the right balance between being detached (it's just a game) and engaged. Also, I just won a 121 turn game, based on watching this channel. Yep, you read that right: 121 turn game (only player on any real ore/blocked constantly). I had to build to 10. Your analysis (based on watching your YT channel) made me realize that my balanced set-up could still win by grinding. Before watching your channel, my instinct was to just wave the white flag. Only ore spots were on 2, 11, and 5. Obviously, the 5 was always blocked. I was plowed to my sheep spot. The wood was also very mediocre. I had to use my wood and wheat advantages to win via trades and a 3:1 port. EDIT: When I say "waving the white flag," I don't mean quitting. You should NEVER quit in a ranked game; it just sucks for the other players. To me, "surrendering" means pulling devs at random.

If you look at the win-rates of the top 20 players on the leaderboard, you will see average win rates 30-33%. That means majority of players are losing about ~7/10 games. Welcome to the reality of competitive catan.

I didn't hear you comment about the 4-3-9 to begin with in order to get the brick and prevent Orange from their ideal setup while pointing to the 8-3 3:1 port. You just need one wood (which you can get on a 6) to secure the spot. This seemed really good to me. I am sure it is not, but I would like to hear your thoughts on it! Is it just because the 6 sheep is so vital to begin with?

1 9 all game. Those dice stats are fucking wild. Maybe colonist should implement a less random dice where if a number shows up so little its odds are higher

Just now getting around to watching this saga. Sunset in the lobby is very fun.. That really stinks. 1 9 is really rough but thats the nature of the game as we have all said multiple times. Capitalcity black was getting on my nerves a bit the 4 alone is an insanely good rol for them and they even almost took army from you which is low-key insane.

Awwwwwwwww, sorry you had a rough game here. It happens to all of us for sure, but still frustrating nonetheless. 🤕 I was honestly skeptical about your starting placements (even if I understand what you were going for) because they were just soooooooo reliant on two numbers and easily blockable. Congratulations on the ultimate achievement this past season though! You definitely deserve it! 🙂

Why pick the set up you did, if you expected black to take the double ore, double wheat, with sheep and brick?
@dandydrew Жыл бұрын
Hi Katie - It’s very rare that you get a win-condition that doesn’t have some competition…it’s a battle either way. In my position, I have to take 693 to make sure no one else gets it. At that point, I decided to put my luck on the 9s. Yes, black would get the 9 wheat as well but I would have a stronger advantage on sheep while he would have an advantage on ore. It’s all about how you outplay the board at that point

6:04 "I don't really like that pick." -- Hi Dandy Drew! Do you mean that Black picking 5-4-11 is bad for Black, or bad for you? In case it's bad for Black, you should probably like that your opponent made a mistake. I mean, what's the alternative? Hoping that your opponents will play perfectly? 😃 Btw I like more your 30min videos, like this one. I can't really engage with 15min videos that are cut to show only the action, leaving no time for me to think about the game.
@dandydrew Жыл бұрын
Mr Smith, good to see you. The reason I mentioned I didn’t really like the pick was because it left the board open in a dangerous way. I did help him plow the 3:1 on the 8 sheep to diminish Hussy’s options, but in a lot of cases, there wouldn’t be too much opportunity at the top of the board. So then he has to play off of the ore port and 3:1 (if he gets it). Of course, it’s all hindsight after seeing the dice rolls. With a more typical dice distribution, I didn’t see his settle being as competitive with the 5411, since his ratios of ore and wheat are a bit clunky and no sheep to dev consistently. Alternatively he could go 10 9 11, apply pressure on the 9 ore with knights, and secure army. Given how the 11s and 4s rolled, he definitely made the right choice! - DD
@JohnSmithEx Жыл бұрын
@@dandydrew thanks for the feedback. My point is that the phrase "I don't really like that pick" is too vague. It can mean lots of different things. If you want to increase the educational value of the commentary, you could be more specific. For example you could say that Black's choice of picking the 5-4-11 reduced significantly your chances of winning, and increased Blue's and Orange's chances. You could also say that Black's placement killed your dream (5:45) about the 8-4-3 at the top being open for you after the initial placements. Experienced players might be able to infer this information without you being specific, but casual players might not be able to connect the dots.
