I think Vlandian infantry is sort of made as anty cavalry, all of them have spear, even rejecting shields as to use the spears 2 handed. So if any peasant is to dismount a cataphract is the Vlandian peasant.

Cav in bannerloard is retarded at this point, no matter what. Most of the time they are calculating something and don't fight just ride around like idiots, make stupid moves right to left, don't cooperate. On the other hand infantry AI is pretty cool. They do cooperate, they are aggresive, can do some fencing, even some tricks like factitious attacks and changing directions of hits. They added very realistic and efficient horse manouvering to the game but unfortunetly, for now only players can make use of them.

I like that they made spears more useful. In Warband, infantry spearman were pretty much useless, so I'm glad they made them better in a way that also makes cavalry a bit less op.

It's bad game design. The game doesn't account for damage from the impetus of the charge, which played a central role in the usage of cavalry. Spears did a lot of work, but horses did too.

@@RagingBlast2Fan the game DOES take account from the impetus of the charge to an extent, but if it was realistic it would make the game totally unbalanced, AND horses should take damage from the impact as well if we were to be realistic. Horses don't like hitting human bodies full speed, let alone if they're armored, even less if they're tightly packed. They would break their legs and die. That's why long lances were used. Horsemen actually wanted to stay as far away from infantymen as possible, plus the vast majority of the kills were done on routing men. If a charge didn't make them rout, horsemen would retreat and possibly try again later.

Marco Mendicino I understand what you're saying. But horsemen should always beat swordsmen. The impetus of the charge should cause the swordsmen to lose a significant margin of their hp if not die altogether depending on acceleration and force. As for balance the way it it works is that a spearman too can couch his spear to receive an impending attack and neutralize the horse, reducing the force of the impact and causing the rider to fall and possibly die, though they themselves might also be hit depending on the timing and length of the spear used. Now, the problem is that bannerlord does neither of these things. First, horse charges are impotent, and second, a spearman cannot couch their spear. These two are related. As you say it's to bring balance. If a horseman did more damage and could not be stopped that would be overpowered. My point is that this isn't a solution and it trivializes the mechanics of the game. I've been a long time fan of warband and more or less accepted that aspect of combat. It's just that one would expect for things to be expanded if only in simple ways like couching a spear and horses doing actual damage. That's all!

@@RagingBlast2Fan RagingBlast2Fan Unfortunately the game is not designed around static formations, thus even footmen at some point will eventually start "charging" alone and facing enemies single-handedly, horsemen included. Thus stopping and couching a lance would just not work properly, as it was meant for a tight formation of soldiers, not isolated individuals. Plus, even if that worked like you suggested, yes it would be "balanced" by a purely "scoring" point of view, but it would be an exaggerated experience with either horsemen or footmen dying too easily. Also it would level the ground between elite units and low-tiers. While that might be realistic, it's beyond the point and design of the game. Its tactical side is not deep enough to make that work. You can't honestly lose an elite cataphract to a tier 2 polearm footman, or an elite mace-wielding footman to a low-tier horseman. Another problem is that they seriously reduced the "encumbrance" of single models as to allow human players to move freely among own warriors without getting stuck like in warband. This also lead to horsemen having a very easy time in escaping from masses of footmen surrounding them. Finally, the game is not big enough in scale to allow historical formations and tactics to actually work realistically. There's not enough footmen to make a decently wide front with enough depth to endure even a single charge. Meanwhile horsemen don't face this problem, since their number is mostly irrelevant. Only footmen can brace themselves, hold each other and form a dense mass. Horses can't push each other, they can't stack their masses no matter how tightly packed they are. They always count as individuals, thus they don't suffer from being in lower numbers compared to actual battles. In fact, wedge and diamond formations weren't used (assuming they ever actually were) to increase penetration (because of the abovementioned reasons, it just wouldn't work), but to increase mobility, since having one or several "points" for horsemen to follow greatly increased their reaction times in following orders and changing direction.

I would suppose a pitchfork could still injure a horse. Horses only need a slight injury to panic and collapse at that speed. The very thin ends of the pitchfork could possibly pierce mail when taking into account the horse's charging speed. Even if not, it's still running into a wooden and steel pole at great speed. But we can assume, as is the case i history that horses have many gaps in armour which were easily exploited by spears/polearms and projectiles.

I never understood in m&b how a spear can completely stop a horse dead in its tracks so long as the thrust doesn’t kill the horse, but if you kill it while charging it flys like 15 feet sending the rider to the ground. That's what that little notch was for, in a hoplite's shield. Brace the spear on the shield, plant your feet, and thrust it lightning-quick like Achilles. Straight for the helmet eye-slit. Very difficult to block in time.

No, just no. What would happen if you try to stop a horse with a spear? If you hit an incoming horse and not impale it instantly, the spear will be knocked out of your hands and possibly broken. Also would a real cataphract miss a bit less often? Things like fatigue are probably not in the model entirely. A nice try, but they have to work harder to make it more realistic. ^_^
