To be perfectly honest I am surprised that the plow lasted this long, you have plowed through some horrendous rock layers and really deep hard pulls through clay and roots, it’s all material fatigue as far as I would think, definitely not anything to do with workmanship or design, the plow owes you nothing as far as I would see it, just a really bad time to let go. Like they say, “things only break when you use them, and usually you are counting on it performing and no replacement in the stable” stay the course young man, you will win, I have no doubts. Thanks for the tag along video.

There are several different types of metal fatigue. There’s compression, tension, shear as well as cyclical or work hardening. This could have been tension or cyclical. Probably both. Could also have been a harder alloy with induced stress during welding with no annealing to redirect the stress. How energy will flow through an assembly isn’t always obvious. Even the best design assemblies can fail in surprising ways.

Safe to say that there is an intense amount of pressure when ripping through rocks/hard ground. Tile Plow V2 - Now with added rock hammer! Seriously, she was and still is a very robust design, the proof is in the beating she took, be proud. Can't wait to see the fix, oh and Aaron's face when you till him it's his fault lol
@Herbybandit
@Herbybandit 9 ай бұрын
That's repairable, most important thing to take away from this is you can see the weak point at the bottom of the lower pin, you need a bit more meat under that pin and the top plates need filleting to get a full thickness weld. In fact all the repairs will need filleting to get full thickness welds. You and Aaron can do it 😉
@kevink4914
@kevink4914 9 ай бұрын
It is repairable but look at the side plate further to the front. The paint show’s stretching of steel above the ripper frame. So unfortunately there will have to be a complete replacement redesign of the frame that boot mounts in. Yes a bandage could be put on it. But there’s signs of structural integrity of the rest now. Not anyone’s fault in the making of. We are have been down this road on at least ones with fab projects. Only hurts the pockets of cash that hurts the most.
@Herbybandit
@Herbybandit 9 ай бұрын
@@kevink4914 quite right, Mk 2 should have a deeper section plate, not necessarily thicker, unfortunately the design left not a lot of material under the lower pin where the failure started ripping up to the next weakest point.

Mikey…. It may be time to change tactics…. Baling wire, bubble gum, JB Weld and Super Glue ain’t gonna cut it on this one. You may wanna overlook those Old School fixes. Thankfully, KZbin ads have provided me with a plethora of New Age advancements that’ll get this plow back in the ground in an instant! I’ve seen Gorilla Glue weld boards together strong enough for a fat guy to walk across a canyon. And, it does it in a 30 second commercial!!! A few drops of it in the cracks ought to hold it in place. And, iffen you are a wee bit skeptical of it being enough… you can reinforce it with Flex Seal Tape. I mean, if a dude can build a whole boat out of it and row it across a lake with 2” of choppy water… one should be confident it’ll hold that dinky little tile ripper thingy in place! Rest assured that it won’t cost a ton, either. Because, if you click now, you’ll get each at an incredibly low price. But wait, there’s more. They’ll send you not one, but two at that same incredible price!!! I mean, Mikey… what have you got to lose? They come with full warranties. Yes sir, Technology to the rescue! And please, don’t thank this long time humble subscriber for the tips. It is just one of the free services that I provide at no charge to my KZbin buddies! PS: If you think it’ll help, I can send you a handful of Sassafras Valley stickers you can put over the repair to purdy it up a bit?

Damn..... You took that one pretty well, respect for that ! Sure you have it figured but more meat above and below the pins to take a rib plate, rib plate above the lower pin, nice deep roots and preheat before welding to mitigate weld stress lines. For something designed and built in a shed by two blokes, that thing held up really well under very very hard conditions, all credit to you for it doing so well until this. Hope you can lash it together well enough to complete your obligations.

Really solid advice. Plus If I remember right they made it all from mild steel. Being that this whole thing was a Prototype. I think it performed awesome. I don't believe high strength steel would have broke like that. I still agree more meat below the bottom pin would be ideal. At least more than the thickness of the plate used. Good luck with the repairs.
