I used your basic model but used the original bucket lid and cut a hole into the lid. Then placed a PVC pipe into it. I also cut a slat out of both sides near the bottom and covered with a screen so that you can#1 allow the mice/rat to see and smell the bait and #2 so that you can see if you caught anything.

Mice are a lot craftier than just jumping out of buckets. They can catch and climb upside down on the wire you put on there, since it has large enough holes for them to stick their feet into. My mice climb upside down ontop of their cage all day.
@abbyskelley70998 жыл бұрын
One way to fix this trap would be to put sawdust or something soft or loose, like sand, so that the mice can't jump as high. If the ground beneath them isn't solid, they don't have a solid platform to jump high enough.

They also squirt urine during such times, loaded with the Hanta just in case you got that kine. Already endemic in every corner of the globe, it goes by different names everywhere with a dozen different varieties that kill you the same dead. Every couple of years or so some poor sap gets and dies of the Hanta heat taping up some water pipes under his trailer house here in Colorado.

Somebody in Long Island New York died from Hanta virus a few years ago after cleaning out his garage. The dust from dried up mouse pee gets inhaled and can kill within 2 or 3 days. The guy was losing his home to foreclosure, and also getting divorced, and then he gets sick and dies relatively young, in the prime of his life. I saw this in a documentary about the housing bubble and financial collapse.

You know, I've been watching a bunch of these "better mousetrap" videos and I still haven't seen the easiest of them all, and what I used to use.... and I was shown how by.... a MOUSE! You just need one or how ever many you want to use; big trashcans, the 50 gallon I think they are, the kind used in factories, and as in my case; flower shops. I came to work one morning and found a live mouse in the bottom of an empty can and realized then and there that this was a perfect, most EASY way to catch mice! Just throw some crumbs or cheese or put some peanut butter on some crackers, anything like that, and the mice will smell it and go for it; either they jump on in, or if you tilt the can, they can slide on in, but cannot get out; too high up for them to jump out. No tools needed; nothing needed, except for some kind of food to attract them!!! Easy peasy and free!!

we use a similar trap at our cabin in the mountains. We put about 4" of RV antifreeze,(the pink stuff) in the bucket and leave it in the winter. They cant jump,they drown and if you put some liquid dish soap in the mix then the smell will stay below the surface.
@Vonneti7 жыл бұрын
It didn't explain why the mouse would get into the hole. That's why some comments here says they didn't get it. We have to assume that he placed bait inside. But we have to see that a mouse would actually plunge into the pail from the hole on top to believe it. A video camera showing it would have been nice.

I used peanut butter and snap traps, but only caught a small one. I found the house mice are really smart, they know where the food store and are aware of new objects in the room. I put all the food away, but they are not touching the traps. Your bucket trap looks quite efficient, I just built one today, hopefully it's going to work better than snap traps.

Clever ideas! What helped me the most was spreading cayenne pepper all over my yard! The store bought poison didn't work. They didn't eat it. Then, I was told to move traps away from the kitchen! They were placed in the attic with a bit of candy wrapped poison, just enough to make them want to leave. I also decluttered and cleaned everything spotless. After that, I got help patching up holes in my walls and now they seem to be gone! Thank God! I still see holes in my yard, so I'm tempted to try your method!

So, obviously this guy has never caught a bucket full of live ones at once. They eat each other in a setup like this. The real trick is to keep catching them and letting them eat each other in the trap ti you have 2 or 3 alpha mice/rats that killed the most of their trap mates, then you release those supermice. They will continue to kill and eat the other mice as they find them. Cannibals, cant beat em. We do this at the feed store. Cannibal river rats are better ratters than any cat, dog, or poison.

I did your "upgrade" trap, But I cut "stucco wire" just so it fits inside the pail about 2 inches, then drilled 2 holes just under the wire- about a 1/3 rd of the diameter used cloths hanger wire, run that through the holes so that the mesh won't fall down, then cut a old metal window screen to fit on top of the mesh, - cut the slot for your 2" pipe in the middle, of the mesh and screen, then put corn kernel's and sunflower on top ( the screen keeps the kernel's and sunflower seeds from falling in the pail ) -Then- cut another wire mesh with the slot for the 2" pipe again - on top of the seeds, ( I put 3 foam blocks - about a 1/2 " thick so the mice won't eat the seeds from the top, then put about 2" of anti-freeze inside the pail( do the anti-freeze before the seed bait) so when the mice fall in - in the winter - - - - - - - - -

this is very kind of you. just because an animal isn't a human (also an animal) doesn't mean it's life is of no use or value. you know how much of the shit that benefits our daily life is tested on mice and rats, suffering and languishing for our benefit? If you can avoid death and suffering then you should. Yes all things die but as human beings, we aren't living in the wilderness living under 'survival of the fittest'. No one making a fucking comment on youtube is struggling. We have the ability to be HUMANE and it is our responsibility to exercise that ability. If you have been terrified before, and you know how that terror feels, why would you subject that feeling on anything else?

I've used these type of traps, they're great. However, I caught 8 in my chicken pen, by accident. I had a handful of cracked corn left in a 6 gallon bucket. 6 gallon buckets are somewhat taller than a 5 gallon. I had accidentally left the lid off. the next morning I went out to care for my chickens, there was 8 mice alive I simply put the lid on. By that evening they were all dead. I use it all the time now. Just a bucket with no construction.

I've had them crawl into the open top of a one gallon plastic milk jug. Add a ramp and some peanut butter inside, and you've got a pretty good trap. I like your idea. Where can you get six gallon buckets?

If you don't have liquid in the bottom of the bucket to drown them immediately, they will sometimes kill and eat their brethren. Suspend the bait off the bottom of the bucket, off center relative to the entrance, and put a couple inches of water (though it may freeze) antifreeze (toxic) or heavy salt brine (best) in the bottom of the bucket. The trap I made has a lightweight, freely moveable rolling cylinder on a stick suspended over the bucket, with peanut butter and a couple of pistachios (like crack for mice!) on the roller. For that type of trap, a screen is unnecessary.

Try using a deeper bucket with a lid. And put some about an inch of water at the bottom of the bucket so they can't jump up. Apparently mice can jump about 12-13 inches. Also try to put the smooth lid on the bucket with a small hole so if they jump they can't grab the top like your wire mess ( which they can chew through)

freeze the drowned mice , that will kill the parasites. Bacteria, however? Anyway, Thaw and serve!

Jason Twist Well wild snakes don't eat mice in a urban habitat. That's what makes them wild their living in the wilderness.

I take them for a swim. Then I put them on top of a leaf pile I have in my yard, and with in a hour the birds of prey are having a feast. Owls, hawks, blue jays , crows and others. Then they hang around and also hunt in my area to reduce the mouse population. One day I didn't catch any and a red tail hawk was sitting on my porch looking at me like " Where's my lunch?". Check out the video of it. kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqnYnGSYfMx5i6c

Maybe if you coat the inside of the trap & tube with cooking oil spray, or something else similar, the mice would have a tougher time climbing the walls. If they continue to chew on the screen they may create an escape hole. Otherwise, awesome idea. Thanks for sharing!🐭
