i really admire that you are reading these books even though they’re not your favorite/you aren’t drawn to them… when i was in uni for literature, i would only read what i was interested in and skipped reading stuff i was assigned that i didn’t think i would enjoy (other than the first and last chapter + sparknotes so i could complete assignments and talk in class). i don’t 100% regret it because it sharpened my bullshitting muscle to precision, but i do kinda wish i had gone this route and challenged my “taste” more. i think my disillusionment with the stuff i was assigned (which i felt because i didnt even try to fucking read most of it lmao) made me averse to academic reading for 2 whole years after i finished school. i am just now getting back into books that challenge me. so good for you for embracing challenge! anyways. i’m not sure what im saying here but i absolutely love your channel and your love for reading inspires me. also your space is very cool!

You are HILARIOUS! It was so much fun listening to you talk about Jane Eyre it felt like I was listening to some VERY juicy gossip! Some of the classics feel very intimidating and not very appealing to me, but you made them feel so accessible!

I remember reading Jane Eyre as a kid and being bowled over by the vocab. There is a scene at the boarding school where a teacher accuses a girl of having too much “excrescence” and makes her stand face first against a wall. Even the dictionary didn’t help. From context clues I realized this girl just had big boobs and they were trying to make her squish them down or something 🫣 I gotta say I love how all this dark awful stuff is buried under a veneer of respectable language, just like how Mr Rochester pretends to be respectable…there’s a word for that poetic device, I think, where the way you tell the story reinforces the theme.

The podcast “Woahmance” did a chapter by chapter read along of Jane Eyre that I really enjoyed. It’s two friends alternating reading chapters to each other & giving a bit of commentary. I think their analysis added something positive to the reading experience for me, I felt like I was reading it for book club! I will say that they gave spoilers for what was to come in the early chapters, but I think if you’ve already watched this video that probably won’t matter for you. I highly recommend!

As someone who loves classics with denser prose and often has a hard time fully enjoying contemporary fiction, it's interesting to see the perspective of someone with the opposite feelings! You're great at expressing your thoughts and describing what you're reading. Fun fact about St. John in Jane Eyre. That name is pronounced sort of like "sinjin." I don't know exactly why, but it's a sort of regional thing. PS As a straight woman who has read Jane Eyre several times, I still don't know how to feel about the romance. But Charlotte Bronte fell in love with an older man during her life, so she wrote about that a lot. PPS I highly recommend The Waves by Woolf.

One interpretation i've read is that Jane and Mr. rochester can only be equals after he becomes disabled, because it makes him dependent on her in a way that also gives her agency over the relationship (which is kind of strange considering she is bound to him by this circumstance) but definitely an interesting way to see it

When I have a book I would rather strangle myself than read, I either watch the movie in the hopes to reap some motivation, or I decide the only way I will get through it is if I get the audiobook and follow along in the book (I think it's called deep reading or something like that?). In this way the narrator carries me across the page and through the book. There's a little less effort and a lot more focus - focus is a struggle for me, esp. if I don't want to read a book, so ADHD readers this might help. Hope this helps bestie!

Just started watching and I am cracking up. I LOVED Jane Eyre and Mrs. Dalloway. Lol I also loved The Year of Magical Thinking, Beloved and Ghost Wall which I know you also enjoyed. Keep with them, they start slow but are both wonderful reads. ❤ Update: Ok, just finished watching the whole video and so glad you persisted with both books. And btw, Rochester is an a-hole lol. One redeeming quality of his to me was him allowing Jane to express her feelings and emotions - not a freedom enjoyed by women in that time period. Your description of the shifting perspective in Mrs. Dalloway was perfect. And it is beautiful, delicious word soup! Try The Waves by Ms. Woolf too.
