Catching a Finicky Groundhog

Cantaloupe usually works in just a few hours. The only thing I catch if I leave my traps open at night are possums or skunks.

I have had zero luck with carrots. I live in West Central Indiana and all the ground hogs around seem to love apples. I live in a fairly populated area and there are almost no predators and the racoon and ground hog population has exploded. I do a lot of live traping; but, I don't relocate them - I shoot them in the trap and the vultures eat them.

Believe it or not, we've got a big problem with these things in North Jersey, just outside of New York City. In Jersey it's illegal to relocate a feral critter, so I trap them and snuff them as well.

That is the only way to deal with rodents like ground hogs your never going to endanger them

Do you realize when you locate these into some “field” as you have commented, you are taking profits away from that farmer or creating a mess for another human. Kill it.
