Feather fishing mackerel is the best. Going out with a few people we put bets on, whoever gets the first full house (all hooks taken and landed) gets free food, usually at the mermaid! Nice video.

As an old pro. mackereler I cannot resist telling of the 'mad dogs' in truly huge shoals(for that's what we called 'em way back in Cornwall's astonishing "klondike" days of the early-mid '70s) we'd fish way off Newlyn/Lands End/Lizard, when 'LARGE' was far from uncommon and weighed anything from your biggie's size of c. 1lb. 6/7/8oz. UP TO 4/4.5lb. and I jest not. My biggest was just under 5lb. whilst my mate had one ~ a scrawny cock fish ~ of 5lb. 4oz. and deep froze it so others pros. would visit just to view it! We 'gurdied' with 120lb. mainline and 80lb. hook strops, each with nothing more than 3/4" of white plastic tube on each of 24 Mustad 4 spade-ends. We 'shook off' by hand (NO strippers!) and we'd aim for 150 STONE (1 stone =14lbs. or 6.2kgs) per man per day............and at a mere 50p. per stone from the buyer..........hard to believe eh? Four of us had 802 stone (5tons) on a drift from St. Anthony Head to Lizard in a mere 5hours..........whilst a 4 handed Looe boat the 'Ganesha' had 1,360 stone (8.5tons) the following day from round the Eddystone. And before anyone kicks off about 'stock depletion' then note that us "fresh market hookers" barely scratched the surface whereas the pursers, pairers & ringers did all the lasting damage.....for the record. Tight lines eh?!

I remember Russian factory ships being allowed to fish in British waters for Mackerel. They would relentlessly pursue the Mackerel shoals, even into their breeding areas. These ship would catch, cook and can the fish onboard, before returning to the Soviet Union with their bounty. Don't think there was a Mackerel quota back then due to the massive numbers. I do recall some form of control restriction finally being put in place that only allowed them to process fish caught and sold to them by British trawlers. It was absolute madness to allow them to fish here in the first place !

Would of been worth putting a lure on if big mackerel are in that close than more than likely the bass are too 👍🏻

Did you dispatch the mackerel before it went in the carrier bag? I know alot of people don't like to see it, but I'm very new to fishing so learning how to dispatch I feel is super important
@RizzoAdventure9 ай бұрын
As you say, not everyone likes to see it, so I decided not to show. Great that you're getting into fishing. More videos coming soon with all the tips and tricks!
