It seems you just can't trust anyone anymore. I have a story to tell and it is a doozy as I caught a thief red handed and you will never guess who it was. It comes in the second half of this video so stay tuned. The first is about me and what I am doing right now with my life here in Nanning City, China. Hope you can see I have changed and not sure if I like it.

Hi Gweilo, I've been watching you for many years, and over the past few years my life has been running a lot like yours. My wife was diagnosed with breast cancer not long after Weifeng's and she finally passed away 3 weeks ago. Like you, I knew the end was coming and as I watched you deal with Weifeng's passing I knew what was going to lie ahead for myself. Watching how you dealt with helped me a lot to prepare myself, I owe you many thanks for the way you've opened yourself up, it has helped in ways you could never have expected.. Enough of that, I'm dealing with it okay, all the stuff that needs dealing with gets dealt with, I'm not full of gloom, less so than I expected, to my surprise, I'm 72, so a bit older than you, but (I suspect) not that far apart in our general thinking, We both like cats, which speaks highly of us, although I am catless at present. So here I am, a widower at 72, reasonably comfortable financially (yeah, I've got bucks in my jeans!) a British-born Aussie citizen, no living family at all,, no real friends (my wife and I were all either of us needed) and nothing tying me to anywhere at all. I happen to live in Tasmania, I retired here, lots of Australians do, but other than owning a home here I have no real ties. I could probably live out my days here happily enough, it's a nice house, great views, it was bought with the expectation that we would live out our days here, which is everyone's dream, of course, until brutal reality makes you realise that one of you will live longer than the other and what was perfect for two may be less perfect for one. I'm tolerably fit for my age, controlled hypertension, but I'm getting old, things could go wrong any time, but I don't feel worn-out yet, I get a pension that's sufficient for me to live comfortably in Australia and so probably nearly anywhere. (I don't mean luxury, just basic western standard). I've been fascinated by China for a long time, as was my wife, but sadly she was wheelchair dependant and so visiting China presented some difficulties. Other parts of SE Asia are interesting too, but I'm especially interested in China, they really seem to have hit on a magic formula that works for a large percentage of their population. I have a lot to think about. I know my wife wished me to do whatever made me happy, so there's nothing I can't do if I wish..

The only advice I can give is chin up and keep moving. It gets better with time and at about 6 months it becomes tolerable. It still creeps into my mind and it still hurts but not as much. Life does go on but you have to be strong and keep moving and doing things that you enjoy. I am lucky as I have my hobby of making videos and that helps me meet people. I am so sorry for your lose it is the worst feeling in the world. You made me cry.

@@Gweilo60 I'm so sorry, it was meant to be an optimistic post, my wife and I had a great life together, nothing sad about it! I just have a whole new life ahead of me and it's quite exciting, nowhere I can't go, nothing I can't do. I was married for 44 years and of course I'll miss my wife terribly, but our philosophy was that life was for living,, I know she wouldn't want me to be gloomy or deep in mourning for her. I want to go to China, not necessarily to live there but to have a good look around, and the standard guided tours which concentrate on tourist sites (Great wall, pandas, terra-cotta warriors etc) don't really seem a good fit for me. I want to see the big cities, the urban villages, the remote villages, meet the people, sit around and "people watch" and the idea of a trip where every day is planned from the day you book doesn't sound appealing. Maybe our Chinese-Canadian friend above has the right idea, find another oldish guy like me with some experience of living or travelling in China and even better if they had some language skills and travel together for a while. Could be fun! I've had a look at Chinese visa sites and from a cursory look it seems like they need a confirmed itinerary and hotel bookings in advance of travel? Is this really right? It would seem to make the kind of "free wheeling" trip I'd prefer almost impossible. As I said in my original post, I have a lot to think about.

I had a great time and put on a few extra pounds as the food was great and the beer was cheap :-). There was lots to see and do and the people were very friendly and helpful. Your channel, along with Barrett, are among the first that I have seen since 3 years ago that have shaped my perceptions about modern China. I have since learned that geopolitics is a deep and twisted rabbit hole that one must always be wary of in navigating through, and truth itself serves as the map to finding an exit. Best of luck to your business aspirations, although I have heard that tariffs are on the way for some varieties of alcohol from Europe in short time.

You should go around and see if there are any vacant shops near Guangxi University. Location is important. It is best to have two floors. The first floor serves coffee, cocktails and cakes. The second floor is an English corner on Saturday night, international students on Thursday night, expatriates on Tuesday night, and so on... When more international students or expatriates come to the store, you can arrange weekend activities such as day hikes or picnics. Opening a store is never an easy task. It must be carefully planned to meet market demand.

Hi Gweilo. It has been hard for people who love Weifang and you to see her gone. But it is also good to see you slowly back to your normal self, one day at a time, unique and cool. As an auditor dealing with people who cheat and lie all my life, please don't give your brother-in-law any other chance, just give him a polite Adios and a firm one. People like that never change. Before you hire someone, or have a partner, you must have a system of internal controls. In my profession, it's a big no no, when you rely on anyone's integrity. We call that a weakness in the system. Once a person is corrupted by this weakness, he is corrupted forever. Human nature is like that. Only someone who loves you unconditionally and vice versa can be trusted. Even a brother can cheat you if his wife advises him to do so.

My best friend in the world betrayed me many years ago and stole money from me. He acted like it never happened. I never talked to him for more than twenty years. Then he messaged me out of the blue one day and I found out it was because he was down on his luck and needed money. I guess after his family and friends turned him away he thought of me as his last hope. Shortly after I refused him he ended his own life. Maybe I'm a horrible person, but I never shed a single tear. You can't steal from people who show you kindness and expect everything to be OK! There are a lot of narcissists out there who think it's OK. Always test the people you want to let into your inner circle.

Don't take it as big deal. It is very common that a brother in law from wife side rip money off from the husband. Actually, we always joke about that a husband has to take care of both wife and her younger brother. You should pretend not noticing this behavior instead of cry out loud. It must be a shock for you, but not a big deal in Chinese culture. Your wife must secretly gave some pocket money to her brother to show that she married a good person. It is called show love to your family and made them proud of you. The person that try to persuade you going into business is your real enemy not your brother in law. As a immigrant now live in Saskatchewan, I have to warn you do not open a business in China. The risk is not what you can understand as a foreigner. You will easily loss all your life saving or even get into trouble with local gangs or government officer.

Thank you for your brave and big heart to share some tough experiences with people Mr. K. We all know that just like just about anywhere else in this world, China sure has plenty of people who are dishonest, would try to take advantages from others inappropriately, and foster unhealthy mentality in life etc. If you had the opportunities and the ability to allow lao pin (is that the person?) to learn and become a better person, more power to you. If L. P. does not have the ability to learn to become better, well too bad for himself and those who might once had the mind to give him some opportunities to change, you already know how to deal with those types of behavior or thinking, and there is also plenty of people in China who want to be as honest as possible, can appreciate your style and thinkings, and will be interested in working with you too. I bet there is plenty of people who have learned about your life both in China and other parts of the world would wish you good health, good fortunes, have the chances to meet more kind and caring people, and find more happiness too. Stay well and healthy.

Hey buddy, nice idea to start a bar, you could also do a hostel along side, tourism is booming, if not the foreign tourists the locals are enough, its not too late to start learning pudung language, i know how lonely it is now for you. But i know for sure if you're idle ,it the devil's workshop. I was there in China a few weeks ago , and loved it. Travelled to Kunming, Dali , Lijiang and Chongqing. Wanted to do zhiangjhaji but lack of time couldn't. Peace out.

The base line is, do not trust anyone. The line starts at zero and slowly builds up over a long period of time. The more well off the person you are dealing with, the more like they will 'stiff' you, one way or another. The worst kind of dishonest person or thief is a family member.

True what you said of Weifeng: the right partner encourages you to aspire to be a better person, likely you'll never find anyone like that again simply because there aren't many. As Thomas Hobbes said 'life is nasty, brutish and short', if you can find someone that put up with you, be supportive... your best friend, makes life a heap easier, sharing the load of life, having another's perspective and counter your worst tendencies. Can't pick your relatives, tough break being pushed to the hilt, dishonoured his sister. Lucky you had what you did, not so lucky now.

For me, worse. It's my own brother borrowed and promise to pay back. Giving me bounced cheques and until now, only given back a tiny bit. I still try being his brother, but it's so very different from before.

Hi. Gwilo. Nice to see your new video. I am a Chinese New Zealander who is currently living in Guangdong province. I speak both Mandarin and English as native speaker. I am an adult English teacher in Guangdong province. I want to join your project to establish a club in Nanning city. I think I am ideal for you.

You claim to be a native Mandarin and English speaker and yet you should of understood that you’re not in Nanning so why bother trying to hook up with Kirk? Just that alone shows you’ve got no common sense to take part in any business matters. You’re very dubious mate!! Something is fishy about you.

Sorry works when a mistake is made but not when trust is broken. So in life, make mistakes but never break trust. Because forgiving is easy, but forgetting and trusting again is sometimes impossible. You can't trust a man, especially your brother-in-law, who has nothing to lose.

Only problem with the Western restaurant business is that Chinese people don't know how to cook Western foods. You would need to be involved with how to cook the menu. And it would take at least 3 workers to run a small restaurant.

Don't feel bad about the Philippines, many a man have been tempted to that lifestyle! I've been to Pattaya, Thailand twice when I was a younger man. Surrounded by temptation makes it easy to lose perspective! Good luck to you on your business venture!

As soon as all the China haters saw the title of the headline they came flooding into this video to watch it! “Ooh he said he caught a thief in China! This is the kind of dirt about China I’m looking for!” said the China haters! Otherwise, they would stay clear of Kirk’s channel!😝

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I know someone who did business in China and did very well. But he also said that China is a very cut-throat place to do business, you have to watch your back all the time. You're an outsider with no real strong ties to anyone there now that your wife is gone. You need connections, guanxi to survive and you don't have it and aren't in a position to develop it. If you did, you wouldn't need to do this video asking for investors. It would be a real risk for you to go ahead with the bar. If you do it, you need to make sure you have a foolproof exit with cash that can't be touched.

Yeah, doing business in China is not for the faint hearted, even more so when the business in mind is without a big moat (like some fancy tech or new product offering filling a blue ocean in China). It's hard not to be cut-throat - there's too much competition. China can be more capitalist than anywhere else when it comes to private enterprises.
