Ruminating on your supposed fails to catch goliath...you could widen your focus. Sitting and observing those ghost-like trout strike from under a log or overhang rock...seeing the feeding activity, studying the cloud cover/rain, pace of a riffle, impacting the catch...is an overwhelming Zen experience. You're very articulate...lucky to know these unspoiled creeks. Even though the big ones evaded you...can you dwell on those exquisite moments...no planes, honks, sirens, doors slamming ad nauseum. You got skunked...but look what at the rich catch you went home with. Smiles.

Don’t delete your “failures.” It really is part of the learning process. My brothers and I fished a trophy stream last week in Colorado and I was the only one that caught anything. I felt bad for them but I decided that it really is about all the fish that I haven’t caught or lost that has taught me so much and had a lot to do with my success. Keep up the good work. I look forward to the next video!

In all my years of fishing in general, 40+ of them to be exact. I’ve learned that it is nice to catch that big fish. But what I truly realized is that it is the experience is what truly matters most. The experience is having the opportunity to be out there learning from your mistakes and then growing by not making those mistakes anymore. With time you will forget about the mistakes you have made and eventually will make them again. Not all of them but some. That’s why I love fly fishing so much. It is never ending when it comes to learning. The day you believe you have mastered this sport will be the day it will humble you. For me, my home waters are in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It is by far the most difficult place to fish that I have personally experienced. The learning curve is never ending. A buddy of mine has been fishing there since the 70’s, before I was even born. He has kept a log for each day he has went out. The PDF is massive. But on any given day he can tell you everything he did on that day from years past. And after writing all of this he is still learning. Never stop trying to learn when it comes to fly fishing. Enjoy the moment and what ever you do, don’t take it for granted. Also, when you planning on fishing the Smokies again?

First of all I agree and thanks for watching!! And yes I plan on going to the smokies again. Maybe even this fall although I haven't decided.

Thoroughly enjoyed watching this series! There are no trout within hundreds of miles of where I live but I've always wanted to fish for them. Thank you for keeping and posting these. My thinking is that this was in no way a failure but more class time for when you next go after him or other fish. I envy you, or anyone who is fortunate enough to have such beautiful water to fish, most creeks around me are #1 off limits unless you happen to belong to a hunting club that has the land they're on leased. Or #2 muddy and the banks are too steep to walk. Or #3 very very limited access (see#1). There is one that has access under a bridge and I fish it a couple of times a year from a pirogue (giving hints as to the state I live in) and usually have multiple fallen trees to deal with in short distances. It is loaded with largemouth and spotted bass and a lot of fun to fish but can at times be more like work to fish than fun. This was a relaxing video series to watch, thank you for bringing us along. This has been a really exceptional little series. As others have correctly noted, you have told a compelling narrative. Your experience of that creek, and your quest, have been very effectively conveyed. Can there, will there be a Goliath 3? I’ll keep coming back to find out, that’s for sure! Another thing that’s for sure? I bet there are a lot of us who hope your secret stream can remain so forever. And I hope lots of younger anglers who subscribe to your excellent channel will have a Goliath of their own to pursue someday - and, more importantly, a stream they will want to guard, cherish and protect. You’re doing some amazing work. I, for one, am very grateful for your efforts.

There will 100% be a Goliath Part 3! But I probably won't head back until early fall when we get some more water in the creeks and the brook trout start moving up to get ready for pre spawn. With in 30 miles of my home in Ohio and WV there are still amazing clean streams. I think these type of videos make you more authentic. The one thing as a fisherman that I would love to see and I think would benefit your channel is to take the extra 5-10 seconds to actually show and explain exactly what size leader or tippet, especially what fly or nymph your using, the size and whatnot instead of saying nymph or dry fly etc.

I have a stream in my backyard, full of native brook trout. They’re somewhat easy to catch, especially in autumn when there are no bugs out. The average size of them is about 6 - 9 inches, sometimes you can get lucky and get a 10 + incher. One evening after a rainstorm, I caught an 11 inch female native brookie, which is now the record. But I’m still out there, trying to catch the 15 incher that is potentially out there!

Is it not the reality for most fishermen that the fish of their lives escapes and is never heard of again? I will never forget the incredible monster of a Brown Trout that I hooked two feet from shore and I could hardly hold for ages. when it was finally tired it escaped a yard away from me: The very solid hook was twisted and straightened nearly completely so the fish escaped at the very end. Unfortunately I could not find out how long and heavy it was. It was so huge that I thought I had hooked a log for several seconds. The red dots it had were as big as a penny!

always interesting to me that in america you would call a char (salvelinus, saibling) a trout, because it isn´t a trout.

Agreed, but that's just what people call it. If I were to call it something else a majority of people would be confused.

Love your videos, keep it up. I do have a question What type of net holder are you using, been trying to find something of that nature.
