Catching Big Crabs on the Oregon Coast

We went out at 5:30 AM to catch crabs on the Oregon coast. We used chicken for crab bait. Got our limit pretty quick, and I want to thank Jeff for taking me out crabbing on his boat.

One of the cool things about those kids that cooked your crab at the end of the video is that those kids are all from different places in the United States they’re not local they get to stay here and work for the season and they give them housing and just a really cool experience on the Oregon coast

Hey PK , you are down in my stomping grounds for crabbing. Last time I went was about 6 weeks ago in Nehalem. I had never seen the water that clear before. We were dropping traps in 10' - 12' deep , and I could literally see the crab walking into our pots. Also......huge piles of sea grass would come in and just swamp the traps. With water that clear , I could not believe the other life I saw in there. 6" jelly fish every where , and also a giant yellow one , that was about 2' across , with 20' long arms! I scored a couple salmon while I was there too! Stay safe dude!

Another great video pK man I watch your crabbing and fishing videos all the time makes me want to sell everything and move out to Oregon. I live on the outer banks of NC surrounded by barrier islands and many miles of actually uninhabited coastline. In 5 minutes there’s no body around in the off season. Great fishing shrimping crabbing and offshore fishing for trophy fish is outstanding. Hey do you ever use shrimp pots? We atypically do not but use trawls and cast nets. I buy cheap cat food in can pop some holes in it tie a line to it drop it over let it soak by the dock then use either a floating light or lantern and cast over it filling my cooler up in no time. Also frozen corn meal balls dropped in the water works great same process! Have a great day my friend!!

I used shrimp pots all the time when I lived in Alaska in the 90's. We did really well with fresh herring as bait. I miss AK and hope to go back for a visit some day. I don't shrimp here in Oregon as I haven't found much info on it. NC sounds like a great place for shellfish. Take care.

Some nice crab.. I notice the opposite and have more success on the big 8+ foot tide swings especially when it falls overnight makes for fast limits the following morning. Key is making sure pots are well weighted and having at least 1.5 times rope for depth and keep pots well baited

Always use a long surf rod to get the distance you want without worrying about wading out, and also ware a life jacket.

Been watching your videos as I am going to do some crabbing in Winchester bay in the next two months. Being an absolute novice, I'd like an opinion as to what type often to use for beginners fishing from the doc or pier? I see that you are a big Promar fan and I was also curios as to your thought on the ring sale nets they make. Thx for any suggestions..

Probably. I've never used it. It would be interesting to set up 2 pots with and without it, and see the results.

I have been watching the videos of crabbing along the Oregon coast for a long time. One thing I have noticed is the bulk of the pulls are usually undersize shakers?? Is it because of the depths of the areas people go to or does it have something to do with the commercial crabbing tossing back all the shakers?

It's normal to get a lot of little ones. It's several factors, pressure being the main one. That bay is a zoo on the weekends so you get a lot of people crabbing and tossing back the smaller ones. It's like that with most or all bays in Oregon.

I was in Oregon last week crabbing in Winchester Bay for a few days did great using chicken then decided to drive over to Coos Bay I dropped my pots and they weren't even down for 2 minutes before a giant seal ripped every piece of chicken out of every pot I had that was the first time I've ever experienced a seal that was so Savage I have never had a seal take my chicken before
