How long do you usually fish your spots for snapper before moving to a different one? And if you’re getting a bunch of shorts/small ones, would you still move off of it to find bigger 12+” fish?

Good action out there! I'm kind of new to this, can you tell me how you guys were chumming?

Cool video. Floating baits down? Any weight on the line? How deep of water can a first timer try when trying to locate fish? I guess you spot lock or will you anchor? Thanks for sharing.

I was near the Skyway a couple weeks ago trying to cast net white bati. I’m used to catching them in shallow water and I could not get anything in the deep water. They all swim away from the net before it went over them. I was using 1/4” net
@Saltyscales3 жыл бұрын
Need atleast a 3/4 in deeper water.

Let me know when you get a 22 inch mangrove...caught that one at the channel near Gold Bond plant in Port Tampa (about 35 years ago).
@Saltyscales3 жыл бұрын
22's are quite common inside Tampa Bay but nice snapper for sure. 👍

@@Saltyscales Glad to hear that about mangroves!! You are not old enough to know what the fishing was like when they commercial shrimped and seined the bay. They would drag all the way up into McKay Bay. Hillsborough Bay was a little too shallow. But inside the Skyway they ripped it up. There used to be turtle grass all around MacDill/Coon Creek area and all the way up to the mangrove banks in the north end. I was in my twenties (if memory serves) when they made heavy regs for grouper, snook etc. It was about 1994 or 95 when shrimping and seigning was outlawed in the bay and waters around the Skyway. Those boys from Cortez were pissed!! If it weren't for those rules you would not be catching rat gags in ten feet of water. On another note; the last time I fished the cuts near Port Tampa (in '96) I actually caught a Red Grouper. It was short but really good to see since they like clean water. Also, just askin'. What is with "threadfin", "pilchard", etc.? Whitebait is short and sweet and unless you are from where "y'all" and "sir" or "ma'am" are not heard very often plain old "greenback" will do. It may be old school but it was "greenbacks" and "glass minnows" (smelt) in the bays, "pinfish" and "pig fish" everywhere and "ballyhoo" and "spanish sardines" in the Gulf. We ate the mullet, smoked of course. OK I am done for now. Have a great day!! My name is Jerry LaFavor. Squirrelgun Smith is a business name. I build custom flintlocks .40 cal and under. I am a retired GA State Officer. Too damaged to do much by my self anymore but it is good to see you out on my old stompin' grounds. Memories!

If you’re going to keep the fish, why not bleed them?
@xrod17523 жыл бұрын
So you don’t get blood on the boat and have to clean it while your out on the water. It’s much easier to keep them in the live well and fillet them on a cutting board later. Plus you won’t have to bring ice on the boat.
