Hey! Brother that was a fun video to watch. I use to be out at either jetty or surf every Saturday back in the 70's. Haven't fished salt from shore in many years. These days I mainly fly fish eastern sierra, but your video makes my heart skip and long for it. Beautiful fish, loved your enthusiasm. One place that was a lot of fun was inlet for the river between Sunset Beach and the Harbor when the bonita bite was on, the power plant warmed the waters there and enticed the bonita to come in....massive fun. Thanks for the excitement brother.
@StartFishingToday2 жыл бұрын
THANK YOU!!! Regarding where you used to catch bonito, yes, they are still caught there when the water warms up a bit. It is actually Seal Beach though instead of Sunset Beach. Sunset Beach jetty borders the Huntington Harbor entrance/exit. The energy plant def helps keep the water warmer than the rest of the coast. Many different species of fish call that inlet home. Thank you for watching and the comment!!!

@@StartFishingToday I was thinking Seal Beach, I knew Sunset and Seal border each other, getting old.

Where were you fishing?

Thanks for watching!!! This is somewhere in the northern half of Orange County, CA. They are everywhere. Find any structure (jetties, reefs, pillars, piers, bridges, cobble stones) that meets sand. They are always there.

Where do you park lot, off to the side not trying to give location. 😂I just want to know how you get from a to b

Yes, I park in the parking lot and walk to the spot.

Ever keep any?
@StartFishingToday3 жыл бұрын
Yes, when legal. However, with this big halibut, I would have let it go even if the oil spill ban was not in effect. After doing some research on halibut age at length, I decided a few months ago not to keep anything over 30". A 32" - 34" halibut is around 10-15 years old. That fish needs to continue reproducing. Thanks for watching!!!

@@StartFishingToday Its admirable you care for the fishery so much, but these fish get a LOT bigger than 30" and guys with island capable boats are limiting on mid 40s quite often. Local guy I talked to about a 33" I caught surfcasting was politely impressed (i.e. obviously being nice but not really impressed) for it being from shore, but apparently that size isn't even considered big by boats that can get out wide and deep and know what structure to look for. I want a boat... but its not going to happen with my knee and back issues so I am stuck on land. Tight lines, nice vid.

Nice job on the halibut] i was wondering what rod n reel that is
@Fuzzie222 жыл бұрын
What rod is that I like the color
@StartFishingToday2 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching It's called an Offshore Angler Brawler Trophy Spinning Rod. It's a really heavy rod, but that 5-arm rig with baits requires a lot of backbone in order to cast it. It will get you in shape that's for sure!

When their that big sometimes it's better to gill grab em man they are feisty
@StartFishingToday2 жыл бұрын
This was during the oil spill back in Oct 2021. It was "illegal" for keeping of any fish in the area I was fishing. Touching the gills of any fish is no good unless you are 100% sure you are keeping it. That is how they live and breathe, so any damage to the gills is almost a certain death sentence to fish. In this case, I already knew I wasn't keeping, so it was okay that it got off. If I was able to keep, I would have ditched the rod and jumped in after it with my other hand 👍

Do you mind me asking what this spot is? I live in oc and have been trying to find a good hali spot for a long while. Great video btw
@StartFishingToday3 жыл бұрын
Okay, as you can tell, I do not give the location of "exactly" where I am fishing for obvious reasons. Word of advice - focus less on "where this is" and more on "Where can I catch halibut?" Believe it or not, halibut are very easy to find. All you need is structure (jetty, rock outcropping, pier pillars, cobblestone, etc.) meeting sandy bottom. Anywhere that happens you will find halibut. Fortunately the OC and LA counties are littered with jetties, piers, bridges, etc. up and down the shoreline. Oh, and fishable harbors and back bays too. Good luck!
I know where this is I just don’t know how to get down there !

Isn’t 3 hooks the most your allowed ? Is the Alabama rig illegal
@StartFishingToday2 жыл бұрын
Great question. So, in California you're only allowed 3 hooks per line/rod in freshwater. Yes, a treble hook is considered 1 hook. You can use a 5-arm, 10-arm, however many arms you want, but, only 3 baits can have hooks. The rest have to be dummies, or, no hooks. California saltwater is completely different. You can have as many hooks per line/rod as you want to use. So the 5-arm rig with 5 hooks is 100% legal in California saltwater. Thanks for watching!

@StartFishingToday3 жыл бұрын
Hey Hunter! Thanks for the comment! Honestly, you can "fish" with me anytime. Problem is that this time of year, the bite is super slow in the jetties and surf, and I rarely go to the same spot 2 days in a row - unless the conditions are prime and they're ready to bite. Later in the spring through early fall is def best here for consistent bite. For this particular video, I didn't know I was fishing there until about 9:30pm the evening prior when a buddy said he hooked a couple shorts. I looked at the weather, tide and swell and determined I was going there in the morning. If you have a kayak and can fish a harbor, that is more predictable, but still slow(er) right now too.
@grahamtrimper3 жыл бұрын
did you fish the incoming tide or the outgoing tide that day?
@StartFishingToday3 жыл бұрын
Mostly slack, but the front-end of outgoing.

you always seem to have these videos with a lot of action. how long was this session?
@StartFishingToday3 жыл бұрын
This session was under 2 hours. Yes, there was action throughout this session and was a lot of fun. Many sessions with no action that don't get uploaded of course...100s of casts you don't see. Lotta work.
@rckymar103 жыл бұрын
good to know! looks like you are always getting hookups! i have plenty of skunk days too so just checking.
@StartFishingToday3 жыл бұрын
Yeah, that is why I have been working so hard finding what works in all areas (ie jetties, beach/surf, kayaking, etc). The more I can diversify my spots, the fewer skunks. I do get bites just about every session, I just don't post videos unless I land at least 1 fish.

@StartFishingToday3 жыл бұрын
Hi Shane. Technically, it is my personally built rig, but derived from the A-rig (aka Alabama rig aka umbrella rig). I build them specifically for where I'm fishing and test different "models".
