-vet here- This actually is an abscess, precisely a hematoma. When cows have a small bleed that gets infected it can clot and cause huge masses like the one in the video. The hard portion was actually calcified fluid, as if a hematoma is left filled for so long it will actually start to turn to a type of bone. This is likely why the bottom of the mass was so hard. In that case a local vet would likely amputate the bone segments of the overgrowth or in a more cost efficient and more 'non' infection causing method they would amputate the tail.

You've maybe heard this a time or two since releasing this video, but you should always make the incision into the abscess from the lowest point possible, and let gravity do most of the work, while sticking fingers into the opening to remove large deposits and making the opening a little bigger if needed. Then wash out the inside with clean fluid to kill and wash any deposits that are left behind. After that, it's upto you if you spray the opening with an antiseptic, and/or inject the animal with an antibiotic to aid healing and any further infections. Note: This is just advice from another farmer. No bad intentions toward you here. Hope things cleared up with the cow anyway. Wish you the very best of luck in the meantime :)

Had a friend who was a beef rancher. One year one of his cows had a stillborn and grieved for quite a while. One day we were observing tbe herd and realized she had somehow adopted a muletail deer fawn. Not sure how, but it seemed to work for them. The fawn grew up in the herd and came back every year with her babies to tbe safety of the herd to raise them.

I grew up on the farm and by 17 I was able to do the preg checks, pull the calves, castrations, dehorning, LDA's, milk fever, abscesses and would assist our vet with the various surgeries on the far. I started going on vet calls after school, evenings and weekends with our vet. He taught me everything I know about vet medicine. I thought I would go on to vet school until my dad discovered that I was gay my senior year. That was the last day on the farm and it changed my path in life. I watch your channel and it brings back so many memories. I was actually driving through east Texas and saw a heifer down with a calf stuck. I had no idea who the land owner was but I stopped, called 911 and asked the Sheriff Dept to contact the landowner. I tied the heifer up to the fence, stripped from the waist up and went to work. By the time the farmer got there I managed to pull the calf. Farming is a hard life. Raising livestock is even harder. Regardless how things went for me you never get it out of your blood. You smell it, taste it and breathe it.

I was brought to tears reading your comment. My heart hurts for you sir. Not just because I am a momma but because of how wrong it was for you to be treated that way. I have a son and 2 daughters and have always told my kids from a young age no matter what I will always be there for them and love them. If they was gay, bisexual, straight it didnt matter. I told them it didnt matter the color of someone skin, culture, religion or where they was from as long as their partner respected them and loved them. I was always open and honest with my kids and they could always come to me about anything. We had a very open communication line and I kept it real with my kids. With that said my oldest daughter is bisexual and came to her dad and I when she was young and told us everything. We was supportive of her decisions and her feelings. One day about a year ago we was talking and she thanked us for being that way with her growing up. She knew she could come to us and be completely honest and tell us anything because of how open we was with her. I cant stress enough how VERY important this is when you are raising kids. Even if you may not agree with every decision your kids make in life you should never ever turn your back on them. I do wish things could have been so different between you and your father. You sound like a very loving compassionate kind man and deserve love no matter what your preference was in life. With your amazing ability with animals you was born to be a vet. Chase your dreams. I will forever pray you find happiness in life❤.

Human doc here. That tail looks WAY worse that just an “abscess”. More like a tumor. I’m guessing that will need an amputation. You always want to incise the abscess at the lowest part so that the incision can stay open and continue to drain and heal by secondary intention-sometimes requiring a drain or packing. Abscesses also frequently have loculations (little pockets), so having long blunt scissors or forceps would be helpful to go in through the incision to break up any of those so the pus or fluid inside can drain. Making that many random cuts up so high means that you will never get all the pus out, and you now have 3-4 more large breaks in the skin where even more/different bacteria can get in. Call the VET, ASAP. Also, I believe the person you had showering them with a liquid spray is for deLOUSING not deWORMING. You can’t treat internal parasites with a topical treatment. And I’m not sure how good that treatment will be since it wasn’t applied to each animal, just randomly squirted in the air… I was also wondering about the use of the prod. They seemed very confused. Is your dog able to be trained to help so you can avoid that chaos? It just seemed like a lot for them to go through.

To me it looks like a hematoma that turned into an abscess. It probably got really bad and started spreading infection that caused the skin to die and fall off. Tumors don’t usually contain any fluids like this. HOWEVER this was far outside their wound care expertise. If they don’t know where to lance a abscess in the right place they shouldn’t have even tried to mess with something this angry and festered. Abscesses like the one one the cows tail are not uncommon. Because cow hide is so thick, Abscesses have a hard time errupting on thier own. For everyone screaming neglect that's probably a week old and most cattle farmers don't inspect every cow every day. It's not actually that big either, I've seen way worse. Poke, drain, antibiotics. Farmers are often trained by vets so they don't have to come do this kind of basic care. An abscess isn't really a reason to call a vet out. He'd have done the same thing and charged several hundred to do it. Your cow would quickly cost more in vet bills than profit from beef. It kills me when people who have never spoken to a farmer try to tell them how to care for the animals they've been raised caring for.

As a farmer / rancher, how often are these animals checked for different health issues??? I think about Ladd Drummond & the amount of cattle he has. And, why brand a cow when you could easily tag them???

Because tags can be cut out by cattle wrestlers. Much more difficult to cut out a brand. Lol

Tags fall off and are easily removed by people with bad intentions. In areas where cattle are still truly free-ranged, grazed on shared land or there are issues with cattle going "missing" branding is ideal.

How did it get so big without noticing, poor thing, nature can be a bugger and even we get big abscesses for not apparent reason. Poor thing an add for kfc probably not the best add for this video lol hope the cow feels better

Omg, that cow with an enormous infected tail deserves to be seen by a Veterinarian, treated, medicated, cleaned, evaluated and professionally lanced. Farmers cannot afford to be this neglectful when taking care of a herd. Those cows make the farmers a lot of profit, they deserve to be treated much better than this!!!!!! This should be called in to people that can direct the farmer to properly take care of this herd!!!!! If not, then pay the penalties of farming laws.

A Vet would have given her a relaxing sedative, and made an incision low on the abcess. If it is clogged up with thick stuff, then forceps shoved into opening and pulling or just poking will loosen and stuff thick will drain. Iodine mixed with water needs to be squirted up incision toward the end of draining to pull more stuff out and clean. This is such a huge abcess a Dr's intervention would be the best decision. Strong antibiotics too.
Pulling a calf & draining an abscess... just a typical Wednesday.
