*JUST FYI* The colloquial name “sand flea” describes a creature that isn’t an insect at all but is a crustacean in the family Talitridae that lives in sandy areas under rocks and vegetation debris and causes no harm to humans or pets. In some areas, they are called beach fleas or sand hoppers instead of sand fleas. Sand fleas that live around beaches are tiny crustaceans that are typically about ¼ inch long. Their coloration varies from gray, brown or tan, much like the color of the sand they populate. Sand fleas possess several pairs of legs, and relatively long, thick antennae. Also, sand fleas have two forked appendages that protrude from the back of their body. Sand fleas are not dangerous but often are thought to be since many people confuse sand fleas with biting gnats and biting midges in coastal areas. The bites from these gnats and midges leave welts on the skin. Sand fleas are predators of small marine animals, but they do not bite humans or pets.

@jamesbrowne6351
@jamesbrowne6351 3 ай бұрын
Although these are commonly called sand fleas, they are also known as mole crabs. These are filter feeders that don't bite. The sand fleas that do bite and carry parasitic diseases are a different species (tunga penetrans) that bore holes in your feet to lay eggs. They are very small and hard to see. Typically found in the tropical regions of Coastal South America but sometimes as far north as Florida.

Once at Nags Head I dug some of those crustaceans up and my sister and I told our other sister that they were sand fleas capable of bringing down a large dog or a small horse and for her to remember to shake her shoes out before wearing them. We forgot to tell her It was a joke and when she got home her farrier came to shoe her horses (like a month later) and she asked if he had ever dealt with injuries to ponies caused by sand fleas lol. He asked her if she thought her sisters were joshing her. On the same trip and after eating at The Outback, we told her that anything with astricks beside it was kangaroo meat lol. In the late 60's /early '70's my dad loved surf fishing off the Blue Lagoon, Beachwood, Virginia beaches in Durban, South Africa and when he wanted to fish one of us children had to go with him as he was a bad diabetic. He always brought along a small gas bottle with cooker and we'd shimmy in the sand as the tide went out and the sand fleas would get caught in a basket like this then we'd rush back, warm up a frying pan and cook them right on the beach. Better than prawns and shrimp 😋...one of my favourite memories ❤

She was looking at it intently for a second when the HUGEST crab came out of it, she screamed SO LOUD and threw the poor guy up in the air and took off running up the beach at literal full speed, the crab landed and went running away towards the water at full speed. She didn't stop until she got out of the sand, it was actually very funny. They were both terrified.
