Catching Salmon on The River Derwent County Durham 2023.

The River Derwent is a tributary of the Tyne.

I used to fish at Rollands Gill lovely river had my 1st rainbow on the fly

I find this a difficult river to fish but it is very beautiful. Perhaps you should have a try again in the spring?

Anybody know if these were all salmon? Any sea trout coming up? When were the salmon reintroduced? Somebody has done a great job.

Unfortunately nobody has introduced any seat trout or salmon and nor are they going to. According to the Tyne Rivers Trust they do not want to 'upset the natural balance of the river' by artificially stocking the river and they want it to regenerate naturally. Sadly the maintenance of the fish passes is almost non-existent so the amount of fish going up the river is reduced to what it should be but last year I saw loads of sea trout and a couple of nice double figure salmon when I was in the river clearing out the fish pass at Ebchester (October or November). A tree had fallen over the pass and there were a nation of logs backed up against it. It took a few hours to clear them all out since the river was still in flood but during that time there were some very nice fish throwing themselves at the dam. Once the pass was clear they presumably went up that. The Tyne Rivers Trust has been doing surveys in the Derwent's tributary streams in the upper parts of the valley and they've found loads of salmon and sea trout parr over the last few years so that is great news. Every year there will be more and more migratory fish coming back up the river but the fish passes need to be maintained to make sure that happens.
