I am an old grandpa now. I have my grandfathers knife, in my safe, that he used to 'fix' the pigs and calves. Took me back in time.

Back in the early 80's my brothers and I castrated 100s of pigs for a local pig farmer for 50 cents each. This is a chore. Brings back good memories.

Yes, He was noticeably larger than the others and has shown signs of dominance. He has that side cut, but it has healed up perfectly. I think he will be a good one!

I really love your videos. We're raising pigs for the first time and are expecting 3 litters in a couple weeks. I'm excited and nervous. I've been following you for a couple yrs, but have been closely following the videos of your gilts that got pregnant and how you're dealing with it. I really appreciate all your info. Thank you so much!

Great set up, makes a huge difference. I thought for sure the blonde boar would be going to a breeding situation since they are not common, very beautiful markings. Thank you.

Another reason to castrate piglets that I don't hear about is to keep them from becoming aggressive the older they get. The dominant male can and will kill the others.

I understand that you are showing what homestead is like and castration is part of it. When I hear anything about castration, my balls hurt.

I've noticed that the flash lights done work as well in the drawer. I wish we had then the head lamps we have today. I have two, a 350 lumin for when I'm alone and the more normal 250- 180 for when I am with others. Head lamps would have been great for catching just the males.

I feel pretty comfortable saying that I have watched every one of your videos. But haven't ever heard you talk about using the signs. Like castrating when the blood is in the feet. To avoid excessive blood loss.

Man o live Troy! I read the one you posted.... "...for castrarion...." then the next scene shows a table saw! My imagination was racing for few seconds..... That would be a most cruel way to go.... On a table saw.....? Ooooouuuuuccccchhhhh!

What's your thoughts on the band method of castration instead of cutting?
@RedToolHouse4 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with anyone successfully banding pigs. Their anatomy does not allow for that method to be effective.

Mountain Oysters for dinner tonight? lol Hey Troy, have you ever heard of the Idaho Pasture Pig? I know of at least 3 homestead channels that decided to start raising the IPP breed. Kevin & Sarah of Living Traditions Homestead, Justin Rhodes, and I think Keeping it Dutch have all went to the IPP breed. They say the IPP breed does not root up the ground as bad as the other breeds and I thought about you raising hogs in the hills. Hogs can be pretty destructive, not that you don't already know this. I don't know that much about the IPP's but if they grow fast to butchering size eating grass and don't try to flatten the hills with a lot of rooting around, I thought you might want to learn about this breed.
@RedToolHouse4 жыл бұрын
Yes, we researched them quite a bit. They grow a little slower than I like, but have great flavor. There are many other breeds that are like them when it come to pasture wear. These hogs should be similar so we will see how it goes!

I see you don't hold the piggers. A pigglet held correctly makes geting both nuts much easier. For most litters I butter I taught someone to hold the piggers.
